How Can We Prepare for Transition?
  • Develop a focused plan of study (age 14)
  • Complete age appropriate transition assessments
    (not just vocational/pre-vocational assessments)
  • Develop Measurable Post-Secondary Goals
  • After age 16, IEP driven by measurable
    post-secondary goals

Writing Measurable Post-Secondary Goals
  • Results-oriented terms (enrolled in, work, live

  • Descriptors (full-time, part-time)
  • Think about where student hopes to be one year
    after high school
  • Based on age-appropriate transition assessments
    (not defined by OSEP)

MPSGs are Not Food Additives

    technical college or university
  • Employment . . . .After high school, I will work
    full-time for a construction company

  • Develop course of study that will reasonably
    enable student to meet MSPGS (age 14)
  • In transition services, include activities,
    strategies, and services the student will need to
    reasonably meet his/her MPSGs (age 16)

  • What does the student want to do to earn a
    living?
  • Are their goals realistic?
  • Where will the student learn the skills to become
    what he/she wants?
  • How will they pay for training?
  • What agencies will help with employment,
    education/training, independent living, community
    access?
  • How much can/will they be involved in the
    community?

  • What is length and cost of the programs?
  • What are the entry requirements?
  • What support services are available?
  • How/where can financial assistance be obtained?
  • What is the application procedure?

    completion?
