RMS Participation in Fleet Battle Experiment
Juliet (FBE-J)
  • Simulated Operations on USS FITZGERALD (DDG 62)
  • Used shipboard personnel at the RMS Vehicle
Operator (RVO) and RMS Sensor Operator (RSO)
    workstations
  • Simulated exploratory minehunting in several
Q-routes, one of which was mined
  • Quicklook Report of 6 Sep 02
  • RMS employment did not preclude DDG
    multi-mission operations
  • effectively conducted exploratory minehunting
    and mine localization.

m/Force Protection
  • Multi-mission RMS provides unsurpassed value to
    surface combatants
  • - Enables manning reductions
  • - Increases ship crew safety
  • - Cost savings (one system accomplishes many
    missions)
  • - Reduces political risks in sensitive areas
  • - Complements OMCM and Dedicated MCM

NOTIONAL PLAN AN/WLD-1 SUPPORT OF HSV AND LCS
  • Target is May 2004 for HSV-X2 operations
  • AN/WLD-1 interfaced to the Integrated Combat
    Weapon System (ICWS)
  • Should procure an additional vehicle (6500K
with quantity buy in FY03) to support this and
future HSV and LCS development and
    experimentation efforts

The Way Ahead
  • Both dedicated and organic MCM systems will
    employ sophisticated, networked unmanned surface,
air, and underwater vehicles equipped with
advanced technology systems to detect and
neutralize mines in the shallow water and surf
zones, will be used to quickly avoid or enter and
    safely clear dangerous mined areas.
  • DoN Transformation Roadmap, Power and Access . .
    . From the Sea
  • Our most transformational effort and number one
budget priority, the Littoral Combat Ship . . .
    They will counter anti-access threats . . . and
large numbers of inexpensive mines. They will be
the backbone of our carrier and expeditionary
strike group organic mine warfare capability.
  • Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Vern Clark
testimony before the SASC, 25 February 2003
