Dissociative Disorders
  • Dissociation Separating traumatic memories,
    thoughts and feelings from ones conscious
    awareness

Dissociative Amnesia
  • An inability to recall important personal
    information, usually of a traumatic or stressful
    nature.
  • Too extensive to be explained by normal
    forgetfulness
  • AKA Psychogenic amnesia
  • not the same as amnesia caused by head or brain
    injury

Types of Dissociative Amnesia
  • Localized failure to recall events that
    occurred during a specific time period
  • Selective failure to recall just certain events
    from a specific time period
  • Generalized failure to recall ones entire life
  • Continuous inability to recall events from a
    specific time up until the present
  • Systematized loss of memory from certain
    categories of information (eg. Related to a
    specific person)

Dissociative Fugue
  • Sudden, unexpected travel away from ones home,
    with an inability to recall some or all of ones
    past
  • Amnesia coupled with physical flight
  • It involves confusion with ones own identity
  • some may assume a new identity

Dissociative Identity Disorder
  • formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder
  • The presence of two or more distinct identities
    or personalities that recurrently take over the
    behavior of an individual
  • amnesia and blackouts may occur when alternate
    personalities emerge

Symptoms and Characteristics
  • the personalities may have a wide range of ages
  • alternate personalities may be of the opposite
    gender
  • alternate personalities may possess various
    physical symptoms (eg. Body temperature)
  • alternate personalities may have varying
    menstrual cycles
  • DID is far more common in women
  • Women with DID have more alternates than men

  • Some psychologists dispute the existence of DID
  • May be suggested by the therapist
  • Huge increase in cases lately
  • increase in the average number of personalities
    per patient
  • Most psychiatrists have never seen a single case
  • small number of psychiatrists have most of the
    cases
