2
Elements and The Periodic Table
  • This is a power point presentation designed to
help students learn how to identify information
that is found in a periodic table.

3
Elements and The Periodic Table
  • The student will become familiar with the element
    names and its symbol.
  • The student will locate an element on the
periodic table given its atomic number.
  • The student will learn how to locate the mass
    number in the periodic table.
  • The student will learn how to distinguish between
the periods and groups in the periodic table.

4
Elements and The Periodic Table
  • Components of the periodic table are
  • Atomic Name
  • Atomic Number
  • Mass Number
  • Number of protons, neutrons, electrons
  • Family Name
  • Atomic Symbol

5
Elements and The Periodic Table
  • The atomic number of an element is the number
that is located in the top right hand corner
above the element symbol. It is the number that
indicates the number of protons and electrons
that are present in the elements atom.
  • For example Carbons atomic number is 6. So
therefore it has a total of 6 protons and 6
    electrons.

6
Elements and The Periodic Table
  • The mass number is the sum of the of protons
the of neutrons. Lets look at the element
    carbon.
  • (Protons Neutrons Mass Number)
  • (6 612)
  • So therefore, the mass number of the element
    carbon is 12.

7
Elements and The Periodic Table
  • The element with the atomic number 6 and the
    atomic mass 12 is carbon.
  • Carbons atomic symbol is C . An atomic symbol
is an abbreviated symbol used to identify each
element that is within the periodic table.

8
Elements and The Periodic Table
  • Each element within the periodic table belongs to
    a family.
  • There are a total of 12 families located on the
periodic table. They are alkali metals, alkali
    earth metals, inner transition, lanthanides,
    actinides, transition metals, metals, metalloids,
    nonmetals, halogens, noble gases, and
    transactinides.

9
Elements and The Periodic Table
  • Each element in the periodic table belongs to
both a group and a period.
  • A group is the vertical column on the periodic
table. Each group is represented by roman
numeral. An example of a group on the periodic
table would be the elements helium, neon, argon,
krypton, and xenon. These elements make up the
    elements in group 18.

10
Elements and The Periodic Table
  • The period of the periodic table is the
horizontal row on the periodic table. An example
of a period on the periodic table would be the
    elements lithium, beryllium, boron, carbon,
nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, and neon. These
elements are found in period number 2.

11
Elements and The Periodic Table
  • The period of the periodic table is the
horizontal row on the periodic table. An example
of a period on the periodic table would be the
    elements lithium, beryllium, boron, carbon,
nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, and neon. These
elements are found in period number 2.

Elements and The Periodic Table
  • Conclusion I would like to thank you for viewing
my power point presentation. After viewing this
presentation, I hope that you have developed a
better understanding on how to investigate and
    locate information concerning atomic elements.
