Title: MLA Works Cited Entries

1
MLA Works Cited Entries
  • Reprinted Material

2
Sometimes a work in an anthology was first
published elsewhere.
  • Give the original publication information that is
    provided for the work.
  • Followed this with the abbreviation for reprinted
(Rpt.), the word in, and the publication
    information for the anthology.

3
A work taken from a collection by its author.
  • In the following example, we have a poem by
Eve Merriem called Tryst it was first
published in her book The Nixon Poems by Atheneum
Press in New York in 1970. It was then reprinted
in a collection called No More Masks by Anchor
Books in Garden City in 1973. The editors of
that anthology are Florence Howe and Ellen Bass.

  • Masks An Anthology of Poems by
  • Women.  Ed.  Florence Howe and Ellen
  • Bass. Garden City Anchor, 1973.
  • Remember that on real works cited pages we have
    to double space all entries.

5
An article from a scholarly journal reprinted in
an anthology.
  • In the following example, we have an article by
Jane Yolen called Americas Cinderella. It
originally appeared in a journal called
Childrens Literature in Education, volume 8,
which is continuously paginated throughout its
volume year, 1977. It was on pages 21-29. It
was reprinted in an anthology called Cinderella
A Casebook, which was edited by Alan Dundes and
published in Madison by the University of
    Wisconsin Press in 1988.

  • Yolen, Jane.  Americas Cinderella. Childrens
    Literature in Education 8 (1977) 21- 29.  Rpt.
in Cinderella A Casebook.  Ed Alan Dundes.
    Madison U of Wisconsin P, 1988.
  • If the article had been published in a journal
that begins each issue on page one, we would need
a decimal point and the issue number after the
    volume number.
  • Note that with university presses, we dont drop
the word press entirelywe abbreviate it to P
    and university to U.

7
An article from a weekly magazine reprinted in an
anthology.
  • The following example shows an article by Edward
    R. Said called The Clash of Ignorance.  It was
published in the weekly magazine The Nation on

  • Note that to indicate that The Nation is the
title of a magazine, we dont underline (or
italicize) itthis sets it off from the title of
the book. We do the same with the titles of
books and plays within other underlined or
    italicized titles.
