Why is using an AED important?
While in cardiac arrest each minute that
defibrillation is delayed reduces the chance of
survival by 10!

What is an AED?
  • Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Delivers an electrical shock to the heart.
  • Allows the heart to develop a normal rhythm on
    its own.

When to use and AED
  • Cardiac Arrest
  • Heart stops beating
  • Ineffective beating
  • Signs
  • Absence of signs of life
  • Unconsciousness
  • No breathing

Precautions when using and AED
  • Do not touch a person while AED is analysing.
  • Do not have anything touch person while AED is
    defibrillating.
  • Do not use alcohol wipes to clean chest.
  • Do not defibrillate around fammable ojbects
  • Do not use AED on a person in water.
  • Do not use adult AED devices on a child.
  • Do not use a cell phone within 6ft of AED.

Steps to giving care with an AED
  • Step 1 Call 911
  • Step 2 Check scene for safety
  • NEVER put yourself in danger
  • Step 3 Check the child
  • Obtain consent from parent/guardian if present.

How to Check the ChildMake sure child is lying
on their back
  • Step 1
  • Open the childs airway
  • Check for signs of life (10 seconds)
  • Movement or breathing
  • Title head
  • lift the childs chin

  • Step 2
  • If not breathing give 2 rescue breaths
  • Hold nose closed
  • Cover mouth with your mouth
  • Give breath of air.
  • Wait 3 seconds
  • Repeat

  • Check for a pulse
  • Place index and middle finger on neck
  • Feel for pulse

No pulse time to use AED

  • Open AED

Press power button to turn on AED

  • Dry childs chest
  • Use provided clothes to dry chest
  • Do NOT use alcohol wipes

  • Attach pediatric pads to bare chest
  • If pads touch use front/back placement

  • Press Analyize Button
  • Allow AED to complete analysis
  • Make sure no one is touching victim
  • Say EVERYONE STAND CLEAR, ANALYSISING

  • If shock is advised
  • Press shock button
  • Make sure no one is touching victim.
  • Say EVERYONE STAND CLEAR, SHOCKING

Step 7 Follow directions given by AED and
continue care until help arrives

  • 5. If no pulse use AED
  • Open AED and turn on
  • Wipe chest dry
  • Attach pads to chest
  • Press analyize button
  • If advised press shock button
  • 6. Follow directions on AED until help arrives
  • 1. Call 911

  • Open airway
