• narrower versions related to institutions,even
  communities.

• concerted effort to change

• deliberate, future-oriented change
• attempts to modify language behaviour
• often results in official or standard language.

WHICH ONE?????

• Vernacular or local (unite through common
  history, shared heritage)
• if several, how to chose
• language spoken in large centres
• language spoken by most people

• Language from outside that is widely spoken and
  understood
• for access to trade, technology and science

CORPUS PLANNING

• Relates to standardising language usually through
  preparation of language materials to
• change script of spelling, script (orthographic
  innovation)
• expand vocabulary, codify grammar, style
• simplify language or its structure
• produce pronunciation standards.

ADDING NEW WORDS

• borrowed words (segue, ballet, chutzpah)
• new words (telescope, sonar, solar)
• revival of old words (broadcast as in media)
• others? New combinations?

GOALS OF LANG. PLANNING

• language purification (correctness)
• language reform (to simplify or modernise)
• language revival (dead or endangered)
• language standardisation (standard forms and
  prestige).

Esperanto

• Designed (in 1880s)to facilitate communication
  between different cultures
• as a second language (not to replace)
• based on Latin and Romance languages but also
  German and English, Russian etc
• is regular, phonetic and simple.
