Title: Chlorophyll levels in Sweeney and West Creek

1
Chlorophyll levels in Sweeney and West Creek
  • By Genevieve Greer

2
Overview
  • Average daily Chlorophyll a levels for sampling
    dates
  • Example of Chlorophyll a level fluctuations in
    one day
  • Tidal flow interactions with Chlorophyll levels
  • Two Questions
  • What is effect of the added fertilizer on the on
    the phytoplankton levels?
  • What role does the tidal cycle play in the daily
    Chlorophyll a levels?

4
Chlorophyll a daily average comparison for
Sweeney and West
  • Highest Phytoplankton levels occur in July
  • Consistent pattern of Chl a levels in Sweeney
creek being 2x the Chl a levels

5
Chlorophyll a daily average Comparison for Nelson
and Clubhead
  • Nelson and Clubhead show the same pattern as
Sweeney and West but Nelson varies to between ½
    and 2/3 of Clubhead

6
Example of Chlorophyll a fluctuations in day for
July 24

7
Chlorophyll a levels in reference to tidal flow
for West 7/27
  • High Tide occurs at 1935
  • There are two peaks, the highest being an hour
    before high tide

8
Chlorophyll a levels in reference to tidal flow
for West 7/24
  • High Tide occurs at 1635
  • Follows the pattern of a high point occurring an
hour before high tide but the there is little to
    no second peak

9
Chlorophyll a levels in reference to tidal flow
for Sweeney 7/27
  • High tide occurs at 1800
  • The second peak after the High tide in all three
graphs is higher showing some sort of
    resuspension occurring

10
Chlorophyll a levels in reference to tidal flow
for Sweeney 7/24
  • High tide occurs at 1520
  • Resuspension is still present

11
Conclusions and future directions
  • There is an increase in phytoplankton due to the
    fertilizer in Sweeney
  • There might be an increase in resuspension due to
    the fertilizer in Sweeney
  • Tidal volumes could be measured on more days to
get more perspective on the relationship between
the Chl a and the tidal cycle
