SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS
  • STI poses serious impacts to women, men and
    infants e.g. sterility, blindness etc.
  • Also STI greatly contributes in the transmission
    of HIV/AIDS.
  • Therefore, there is a great need to know prevent
    and/or treat them early.

Definition
  • These are the infections that are in most cases
    transmitted through sexual contact
  • There are more than 20 organisms causing STI
    including bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

  • Sexual contact
  • Blood to blood contact
  • From Mother to Child

  • Major 2
  • Incurable
  • Herpes simplex virus (HSV), Hepatitis B C, HIV,
    Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
  • Curable
  • Subdivided into 4 syndromes according to symptoms
    and signs

  • There are several types of curable STIs but have
    been grouped according to the symptoms and signs
  • Genital Ulcer Diseases (painful or painless
    ulcer, lymphadenitis, painful urination)
  • Syphilis (kaswende)
  • Chancroid (Pangusa)
  • Genital Discharge Syndromes (Genital discharge,
    painful urination, itching, spotting, LAP,
    painful coitus)
  • Gonorrhoea (kisonono)
  • Chlamydiasis (Klamidia)
  • Candidiasis (Kandidiasisi)
  • Trichomoniasis (Trikomoniasisi)

  • 3.Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases (PID)
  • This disease affects women and it presents with
    severe lower abdominal pains. It may arise as a
    complication of gonorrhoea or chlamydiasis
