Graduate Education

• The structure and goals of graduate education are
  quite different from undergraduate education
• Undergraduate education is focused largely on
  mastering through class lectures, discussions,
  and labs what scholars before us have learned
  through research
• Graduate education is focused on learning to
  perform productive research and scholarship
  ourselves
• The goal of graduate education is to become a
  practicing scholar to become a productive
  member of the community of scholars!

  to acquire during the course of your Purdue

  about them often, but (unconsciously) they guide

• Integrity in research is an essential part of
  Purdue Universitys intellectual and social
  structure, and adherence to its spirit and
  principles must be maintained. These principles
  include commitment to truth, objectivity,
  fairness, honesty, and free inquiry.

• Id like to challenge you to broaden your
  expectations
• By all means, you must learn the literature,
  fundamental principles and tools of your
  discipline
• But, it is also important to learn the principles
  and standards of ethical behavior in research,
  and the laws and regulations that govern the
  practice of research and scholarship.
