Title: Elements and Compounds

1
Elements and Compounds
2
Elements
  • An element is a substance that cannot be
separated into simpler substances by a chemical
    change.

3
  • All elements are listed on the Periodic Table

4
  • Some elements are named for famous scientists.

5
  • Elements have abbreviations called element
    symbols.

6
  • Each symbol has one, two, or three letters.

7
  • The first letter is ALWAYS capitalized and the
2nd and 3rd letters are NEVER capitalized.

8
  • Some symbols are derived from the Latin name for
    that element.

9
  • The Periodic Table organizes elements according
    to their properties.

10
Compounds
  • When two or more elements combine in a chemical
    reaction, they form a compound.

11
An Example
  • Magnesium and oxygen react to form magnesium
    oxide.

12
  • Scientists wouldnt write out magnesium oxide but
would write this compound as MgOa chemical
    formula.

13
  • Elements and compounds are pure substances.

14
  • Every pure substance has a unique set of chemical
    and physical properties.

15
  • Measuring the mass of a substance can indicate if
it is an element or a compound.

16
  • Using electrolysis can also separate compounds
    into component elements.

17
WATER
  • Water is an example of a compound that can be
broken down into hydrogen and oxygen.

18
MIXTURES
  • Mixtures are a blend of two or more pure
    substancesMilk, Seawater

19
  • Heterogeneous Vs. Homogeneous

20
Heterogeneous
  • A mixture that has visibly different parts.
  • ExampleChocolate Chip Cookies

21
Homogeneous
  • A mixture that does not contain VISIBLY different
    parts.
  • Example--seawater

22
Separating mixtures
  • Filtration
  • Distillation
  • Crystallization
  • Chromatography
