Title: Sedimentary rocks form on or near surface of the earth'

1
Sedimentary Rock
  • Sedimentary rocks form on or near surface of the
    earth.
  • Rocks and minerals that are broken into small
pieces by wind water and ice are called sediment.
  • Clay, sand and mud are all sediments
  • These sediments settle on the bottom of water,
then other sediments cover them, and more
sediments cover them and so on.

2
Sedimentary Rock
  • Over hundreds of thousands of years a new rock is
    cemented together.
  • Sedimentary rocks are usually layered.

3
Metamorphic Rock
  • Metamorphic rocks are igneous and sedimentary
rocks that have been changed by extreme heat and
    pressure deep within the earth.
  • The high temperatures and pressures force the
rocks to form new minerals and therefore change
    the way they look.
  • For example sandstone becomes quartz, granite
    changes to form Gneiss.

4
Igneous Rock
  • Igneous rocks are formed when volcanoes erupt.
  • Hot magma or melted rock pushes upward and
escapes through a hole in the earths crust.
  • When magma reaches the surface of the earth it
cools quickly and is called lava.
  • Rocks formed this way are called extrusive
    igneous.

5
Igneous Rock
  • Intrusive Igneous Rocks
  • Other igneous rocks are formed inside the earth.
  • Over millions and millions of years the magma in
the earth cools and hardens into rock.
  • We do not see these rocks until wind water and
ice wear away the earth so we can see the rocks.
  • These rocks are called Intrusive Rocks.
