Integrated approach
  • Integrating basic

  • Rehab specialists are in ideal

7
Why should rehab specialists learn psychology?
  • Closely involved with client and
  • tend to spend more time with client
  • than any other health practitioner.
  • Use of touch means people
  • are more likely to disclose
  • psychosocial matters (Nathan, 1999).

8
Why should rehab specialists learn psychology?
  • There are so many psychological
  • reactions to injury, it is logical
  • that such issues are discussed
  • concurrently with the physical
  • aspects of rehab.
  • Injured athletes reported physical
  • therapists were best positioned to
  • provide basic psychological and
  • counselling support (Pearson Jones, 1992).

9
Psychology in exercise rehabilitation
  • no experience in the mental health fields, but
most medical personnel will treat some patients
suffering from major symptoms of anxiety and
depression within the first year of practise

10
  • Physical therapists reported that managing
behavioural problems in their clients, and
    managing clients expectations during
rehabilitation were the two most difficult areas
    to deal with.
  • More experienced practitioners were able to
    distinguish between clients with diagnosed
    psychological problems and clients with
    psychosocial concerns, less experienced
    practitioners could not.
  • (Potter 2003)

11
Physical therapists reported that
  • using sincere and positive communication,
  • having knowledge about setting realistic goals,
    understanding stress, anxiety, and motivation,
  • being able to encourage positive self-thoughts
    and self-confidence,
  • being able to reduce symptoms
  • of depression
  • ,
  • ...were important skills when working
  • with injury.
  • (Francis et al., 2000)

12
  • Behaviour modification techniques and
communication skills were identified as the two
areas that health care professionals would like
to learn more about to assist with difficult
    patients.
