Title: Every man is his own ancestor, and every man his own heir' He devises his own fortune, and he inheri

1
  • "Every man is his own ancestor, and every man his
own heir. He devises his own fortune, and he
    inherits his own past."
  • Francis Herbert Hedge

2
  • And your past is in your DNA.

Journey of Man
  • What can the Y-chromosome tell us about human
descent? It is a historical document where tiny
spelling mistakes, mutations, tell of us our
    past.

7
  • If two people share a change, then they share an
    ancestor.
  • By looking at mutations we find that ultimately
all of us share a common ancestor.
  • male line, (Y chromosome traces back to a common
male ancestor for everyone alive today.
  • Called Adam

10
Where did Adam live and what did he look like?
  • He lived in Africa
  • 60,000 years ago.
  • The present-day inhabitants of Ethiopia, Sudan
and southern Africa carry the clearest signals of
    our earliest ancestry.
  • fully modern, both in terms of his appearance and
    his brain function.

11
  • It is speculated that perhaps the San Bushmen of
the Kalahari - give us a portrait of Adam and his
    fellow early humans.
  • As you watch the DVD note the involvement of
    linguistics, anthropology, and molecular biology

What does the Y chromosome tell us.
  • All modern humans were living in Africa until at
least 60,000 years ago, or 2000 generations.
  • Route taken by homo sapiens as they left Africa
    and populated the Earth.
  • It is a historical record.

17
  • Women also have a female history written in their
mitochondrial DNA, showing the path to Eve around
    150,000 years ago.
  • Mitochondrial signal provides less resolution for
studies of population history than the Y.

18
  • Our Adam and Eve weren't the only people alive at
the time, just the lucky ones who left
descendants down to the present day.
  • But it is nice to know that we arrive at the
same general conclusion we're all related.

19
  • So what does our DNA tell us?
  • Our differences are related to environment and
    natural selection.
  • As you watch
  • What are the differences between race, ethnicity,
    and culture?
  • How would you define yourself?
  • Note data from many sources.
