Title: Global Product Development GPD: A Global Lecture on Design and Manufacturing of Global Products
1Global Product Development (GPD)A Global
Lecture on Design and Manufacturing of Global
Products
Prof. Deba Dutta, University of Michigan, Ann
Arbor, USA Prof. Jongwon Kim, Seoul National
University, Korea Prof. Guenther Seliger, TU of
Berlin, Germany
2GPD is ..
- Preparing our students to face the challenges of
the competitive and global workplace of today - To develop new global products to be marketed in
diverse regions worldwide, and - To experience working in a cross-cultural and
geographically distributed team (exploiting the
diversity of thought process)
3GPD spans three continents

component
GPD 2002
- For training global teamwork
- 8 project teams
- Each team has students from three universities
- One-week kick-off meeting
- Experience distributed development
- One-week final design project exhibition
10Each team works on ..
- Marketing and product planning
- ? Presented at the Kick-off Meeting
- Conceptual design
- ? Design Review 1
- Embodiment design
- ? Design Review 2
- Manufacturing a prototype
- A virtual and/or physical working one
- ? Presented at the Final Exhibition
11Design project topic of GPD 2001/2002
Internet-ready Product
- Add the Internet-ready function to an existing
product, or - Develop an Internet-ready product, for an unmet
need
12Final Exhibition at SNU (GPD 2002)
- The 3rd International Forum on Global Product
Development (Dec. 12, 2002, Seoul)
13Final Exhibition at SNU (GPD 2002)
- Design Project Exhibition (Dec. 12, 2002, Seoul)
14Project topics of GPD 2003
- 1 Packaging for the transport of motorcycles
- 2 Low cost and energy efficient products for
developing countries - Kick-off meeting at TU Berlin (Sep. 27 Oct. 3)
- First design review (Oct. 21)
- Second design review (Nov. 18)
- Final exhibition at UoM (Dec. 8 Dec. 12)
15From a GPD 2002 student ..
What we learned most from this course is that
international collaboration is not easy. In
fact, it's damn hard! But we had many e-tools
available.
16Centra Symposium
- Four webcams from three countries, all active,
all at once! - Common presentation sharing space with
whiteboard, and - Obligatory text chat window.
17Collaborative CAD tools
- eVis and Alibre
- Viewing and manipulation of 3D object models in
real time over standard Internet
18While E-tools are indispensable ..
- Face-to-face meetings are crucial for
- Establishing trust and bond between team members,
and - Understanding
- Cultural differences
- Technical competency within the team
- Overcoming language barriers
19GPD changed the way the students saw themselves
and the world around them
All in all, it was an amazing class. More than
just a class, it was an experience that did more
than any textbook could to change one's
perspective on engineering design.
