1A registered charity established to offer the
Sunflower Therapy to children with health,
learning and behaviourial difficulties
Registered charity no 1055712.
2The Sunflower Trust Established since 1996
- Using the Sunflower Therapy, we've helped
thousands of children. Some with obvious learning
and behavioral difficulties and others that are
underachieving for no obvious reason both of
which just need a little extra help to reach
their potential - We believe that balanced, integrated and healthy
children will naturally perform better, feel
happier, achieve more, mix better socially with
others and have a greater sense of
self-confidence - We offer a drugs-free, non-invasive and holistic
alternative that's totally respectful of every
child we see - Since each patient is unique, each treatment
sequence is unique. We focus on the causes, not
the symptoms. Symptoms are just the body's way of
drawing attention to a problem once the causes
have been treated, the symptoms will usually
disappear - The Sunflower Therapy is a comprehensive approach
to the diagnosis and treatment of learning
difficulties. It is a unique way of relieving
stress and promoting well being using an array of
safe, natural therapies matched to individual
needs - The Sunflower Therapy is based on the concept
that physically, neurologically balanced,
healthy, well integrated children naturally
perform better, feel better, achieve more, have
greater self esteem, get on better with others
and make the most of their opportunities
3Assessment details
- How much does it cost?
- Sunflower Trust is able to offer free of
partially subsidised treatment, consult your
GP/teacher for a referral - Private patients 130 for initial consultation,
assessment and report. Subsequent appointments -
78 for 40-min double appt / 44 for 20-min
single appt - Additional costs for homeopathic remedies or
nutritional supplements apply - Consultations
- Allocate approx a full school term (8 months) to
allow the child to discover and explore the
re-activated parts of his/her more integrated
mind and body which results from the treatment - Preferable to see children weekly for the first 4
6 appointments - When the chemical side of the treatment is
reached, there is a gap of 4-8 weeks between
treatments so the nutritional programme
prescribed can be followed and have time to work - Thereafter additional time is required for all
the treatments to settle in before re-assessments
are made - A re-assessment should follow nine months to a
year after the initial consultation - How does the child cope?
- Little or no reported problems with children
- Some slight discomfort for short time may be
experienced in the early stages but this is
within the degree of discomfort that children
might experience in their day-to-day activities - Occasionally some children find difficulties in
following nutritional programmes and taking food
supplements where indicated - Full support and encouragement from the parents
is a crucial factor in helping children overcome
any difficulties during the treatment process

6Diagnosis Do you need our help?
- Many children we see demonstrate clear symptoms
indicating theyre having difficulties with
behaviour and/or learning efficiently. The set of
symptoms may have been labeled as dyslexia,
autism, Aspergers syndrome, dyspraxia, ADD or
ADHD, but there's frequently a degree of overlap
and many children will display a range of
symptoms - If you're worried about your child and would like
to know if the Sunflower Therapy might help,
review the questions below with your child in
mind. If you answer 'yes' to more than four of
these questions, your child will probably benefit
from the Sunflower Therapy - Have you noticed any of the following in your
child? - Difficulty with reading, writing or mathematics
- Difficulty in understanding words in normal
conversation - Inability to relate to people in groups or
understand the conversation - Poor or non-existent sense of direction
- Little or no concept of time
- Inability to concentrate, remember names
- Disequilibrium (balance dysfunction)
- Poor motor co-ordination
- Constantly bumping into things or dropping things
- Stuttering, hesitant speech, poor word recall
- Sharp, emotional mood swings
- Needs to re-read same word/phrase to understand
meaning - Difficulty in following sequential instructions
or events - Difficulty in following motion/moving things
(people,balls,traffic)
7Supporting Research
- Research findings that support the work of the
Sunflower Trust - BOTH ALCOHOLISM HYPERACTIVITY EACH HAVE A
GENETIC BASE - Research has shown that 15 of hyperactives were
already excessive drinkers by the age of 16 years
(Rutter Hersov). A Canadian study showed that
hyperactive teenagers use alcohol more frequently
than their peers, and US researchers found that
33 of young male alcoholics were hyperactive
when young. (Journal of Paediactric Psychology
Vol 3.4 (1978) Journal of Psychiatry 140,
January 1st 1983). - The Ottowa study reported that those
hyperactives who were treated with Ritalin were
compared to those untreated and even when good
and poor responders were examined separately no
beneficial effects of the drug on academic
achievement, intellectual ability or behavioral
ratings, were evident. -
- WATCHING TELEVISION EFFECTS ON CHILDRENS SLEEP
PATTERNS - Researchers from the University of Florence found
that television viewing can reduce levels of
melatonin, the hormone that regulates our sleep
patterns. - Children who were denied television for a week
had a 30 increase in their melatonin levels by
the end of the experiment, the researchers
discovered. -
- TOTAL LOAD THEORY
- When a childs constitution is over-loaded with
such factors then the breakdown of normal
development occurs. This results in neurological
confusion, developmental delays and autoimmune
problems. It is often coupled with attention
deficit disorder, behaviour problems and learning
difficulties (Kelly Dorfman)
8Sunflower Trust Study
During the years 1999 - 2002 The Sunflower Trust
in conjunction with the Roehampton Institute
London (part of Surrey University), co-sponsored
a three-year PhD research project on the
Sunflower Therapy. Objectives 1. To
discover if there are elements of impaired
efficiency in the many different areas of
function controlled by the nervous system. 2.
To determine if it is possible to improve these
areas of function via natural medicine. 3.
To establish if improvements in such functions
are associated with comparative improvements in
their learning abilities, health, behaviour and
performance. Significant improvements in
quantitative and qualitative recorded scores
measured during the course of the research would
in our view, provide good clinical evidence for
the value of the Sunflower Therapy. The
Sunflower method is not a substitute for special
needs teaching for dyslexic children but
complementary to it.
9Background Information
- 61 children, diagnosed as dyslexic by educational
psychologists, were given the Sunflower
assessment (Sunflower Screen) - Each child was designated to one of five
Sunflower practitioners for treatment. Each child
received five 40-minute treatment sessions and
was then re-assessed. (Normally seven
appointments would be required) - 34 males and 27 females, between the ages of 6
and 13 years were treated - None of them completed the Sunflower process for
reasons of finance and time - Treatment took place over an 8-12 week period.
(Normally 4 - 9 months) - Some of them did not even start the nutritional
phase - Each child was treated in accordance with what
was found - The data that is being presented here is based on
that which was collected from each of the 61
children before the first treatment and after the
fifth treatment session

18Conclusions
Although not all the improvements measured are
significant (at p 0.05) they have all improved.
This gives added credence to the value of an
integrated approach to help children with complex
sets of problems The broad spread of the initial
scores shows that it is more efficient to treat
every child individually. Standard Deviation
indicated by second score in virtually every
case, suggests that individual treatment was
consistently effective. As the children were
treated by five different practitioners and
showed similar improvements (though not all in
the same areas), we can be confident that the
improvements are associated with the Sunflower
Therapy they received. In some cases no
nutritional therapy/treatment at all was given.
Nonetheless, some of these children improved on
their nutritional assessments. It seems that by
first sorting out the major structural
impairments, the body is able to operate more
efficiently, with less need for additional
supplementation. The German data indicates that
the therapy works equally well regardless of the
language spoken. The savings that could be made
by enabling children to be healthy, balanced and
well, so that they can make the most of their
opportunities to co-operate and contribute to
their communities, could be immense.
19The Results - Case Studies
- Connor was experiencing serious difficulties at
school and had no self confidence. He was born
prematurely and has a history of problems with
his hearing and eyesight. Connor was diagnosed
with Aspergers Syndrome and Social Communication
Disorder at 8 years old. - When referred he was described as having
difficulty with school work and very
argumentative. Connor was given a Bursary in
February 2005 and he has completed his treatment
at the Reve Clinic. - His mother, who is a single parent, spoke of the
wonderful feeling to have the load shared and
taken off my shoulders, and to see success
coming. The effects of the Sunflower Treatment
have been huge, Connor is very dyslexic but over
the last year there has been a big change in his
reading and writing and his confidence. He is
pictured here with his rugby medals and trophies
and said, I wouldnt have won them if I hadnt
had the help..
20Case Study 2
- William has always had a range of difficulties,
particularly with concentration. He needed
constant prompting to stay on task in both school
and homework He was also very emotional with
frequent outbursts of temper. He had problems in
socialising with his peers and he found it
difficult to maintain eye contact with anyone
other than close family. William received a
Sunflower Bursary in September 2005 and was
treated in Oxford at Helix House. -
- From the first session William very quickly
built up trust and rapport with Clive. Clive
always explained exactly what he was doing and
why on a level that William easily understood. -
- I started to see changes in William quite
quickly says his mother.. William today is a
different boy. He has found new confidence, plays
with other children well, maintains eye contact,
volunteers conversation with adults and is
generally a lot calmer. There have also been
improvements at school. His concentration is
improving he is above average in reading and
spelling and all other subjects is comparable
with his peers. I feel that the Sunflower
treatment has really unlocked his potential and I
am now looking forward to seeing his
achievements. My heartfelt thanks to all at the
Sunflower Trust for all your kindness and
support.
