Grade Weighting
  • Classwork/Homework 20 Checked for being on time
daily, (see employability), but collected and
graded as a portfolio after tests on that topic,
to keep it available for reference. The portfolio
materials required are selected to make a good
sample of accomplishment to show to prospective
Colleges, Institutes, and Employers, and to
represent information that will be covered on the
    tests and finals.
  • Labs 20 The daily performance watching videos
and doing benchwork, and computerized DEPCO
tests, and the worksheets turned in at the end of
each lab will be weighted equally to arrive at a
    lab grade.
  • Employability 20 Deductions are recorded in the
Student Assignment book, which parents should
check, initial weekly, to see if attendance,
    tardiness, on-time assignment completion, having
required materials (see above), comportment, etc
    are up to their expectations.
  • Tests 20. Cover complete units. Are open book,
    open notes.
  • The Midterm will be weighted 20 with the First
Quarter grades, and the Semester Final 20 with
Second Quarter grades to give a final course
    grade. Covers Class, labs, projects.

JS Read Letter to Parents while I pass out Non
Disclosure, and letter,
Dear Parents of Engineering Technology
Students   Congratulations to you and your
student on their having been placed in our
program.   As you will see by reading the
attached course syllabus, the Engineering
Technology course would have been a 4 year
progression in the old year-per-course system.
Thanks to the magic of block scheduling, a
student now takes a one year course in half a
year, so the 4 years could, at least in theory,
be done in only two years. The first of the 4
blocks (Engineering I) concentrates on the
overall concepts and activities of engineering,
with less than 1/3 of the time being spent in
lecture (classical teaching mode), and 2/3 in
student hands-on discovery, or natural
learning, which is much more self paced,
multi-sensory, individualized, (AND interesting)
than classical teaching methods.
25
Over half a million dollars of hardware and
software have been brought together in my
classroom. It is not merely similar to, but of
the actual equipment used in large and small
industry today. Many of the lessons have real
world scenarios ( background stories) that go
with them, drawn from real life experiences I
have had, or have seen happen to others. This,
and your students declared interest in this type
of subject should help prevent the why are we
learning this? resistance found in many courses
at the high school level.   The pace of
technology is fast and increasing. Courses can no
longer emphasize memorizing the answer, but
need to teach how to self-learn the new
information as needed, and where to find it. The
lone individual, while an important historical
heroic figure, is now replaced with teams of
specialists, many of whom must learn and apply
new skills for each project, which often will
never be used again. America is in danger of
losing its place as a world leader (and its world
leading standard of living). While engineering
colleges only accept freshman students who are
fully able to pass all their subjects and
graduate, half of all freshman Engineering
students entering college today drop out because
they are overwhelmed by culture shock.
26
It is the expectation of this District, this High
School, and myself, that our program graduates
not only survive the freshman year, they are such
stand-outs that the best companies actively
recruit them, and their school actively recruits
other graduates from our program. This is true
whether or not the student goes on to college or
to a technical institute.   We also expect that
over the course of the program graduates
careers, they understand how to be promoted
faster, earn more money, get more interesting
assignments, and make a greater contribution to
the worlds well being than do their peers. Most
of the Lab lesson material is on the computer, as
are most assessments (tests). Students are
assigned some projects, which require them to
assume typical roles they will encounter during
their careers, if they enter the engineering or
technician professions. Students who need to make
up Labs can come in after school Mons, Thurs, or
Fridays from 215 to 315   There is another
member of the team that the District, the School,
and I need help from, however- you.
27
Please emphasize to your student that their place
in class is a privilege, not a right. Students
who are disruptive, truant, who do not do the
work, will be removed to give a chance to those
who really wish to try.   Please give a phone/
cell phone number at which you can be reached
during school hours, so that I can call you on
the spot, if your student fails to meet the class
expectations. If they know we are both this
serious about using the opportunity given them,
most students will respond by avoiding
problems. I mark missing assignments in Smartweb
as a zero. Please check it each week-end before
deciding how much work your student has, and if
they need to be grounded or rewarded for their
performance in class that week. If you do not yet
have access to your students smartweb attendance
and grades, please call the guidance office and
get it. All my Classwork/Homework (CwHw)
assignments are collected as units, after the
test on the unit. I send a teleparent call home
to warn when the units are due. The assignments
are posted on my teachers web page.
(http//teachers.srqk12.net/jimmathews)   Together
, we can make this the High School experience it
should be for your students. Please join with the
District, Sarasota High, and me, and give what I
believe is the finest program ever developed to
teach Engineering and Technology that
chance.   In Partnership- Jim Mathews

Lab Safety and Security Procedures
30
Students must wear Safety Glasses if provided.
Students must do the safety activity, if
provided, before any other activity.
Students must only carry out Activities provided
Students must carry out activities following the
step-by-step instructions.
Students must halt, wait for Teacher when so
instructed. (Red Screen, counting timer.)
31
Student movement Students may not move around
classroom or enter the lab during non-lab times.
Once in the lab, they must remain at their
assigned workstation for any reason unless given
permission to move away from the assigned
workstation. (Red Screen, Counting Timer to ask
question, seek help.)
  • Students get until the 3 minute grace at start of
class to use restroom. After this, they must ask
permission to move from their assigned spot in
    the classroom or lab.

They get a max-two-at-a-time restroom break after
30 min, and at end of class. (during journaling
time.)
32
  • Students must stop the lab between 10 and 5
minutes before class ends, clean up, and get
cleared to return to seats. (they remain at
equipment until checked out by teacher, who locks
    up at that time.)
  • At their seats, they work on journaling,
homework, review, etc. until bell rings. Do not
leave seats until teacher releases class (no
    standing at door.)

33
CONSEQUENCES for miss-behaving students (unable
to control their urges)
Minor Offenses First offense is warning.
Second offense is return to to their classroom
seats (miss lab) for the rest of the period,
longer at my soul discretion, and receive
teleparent call home and employability deduction.
Chronic offense adds note home, requesting
teacher parent conference. (must not return to
lab until after parent contact, resolution).
Further offense or first major offense (requires
an administrator referral for discipline,
including possible transfer out of class.) 5
point Employability deduction, Teleparent call
home)
34
The equipment has lockable parts, power
interlocks. They will all be kept locked unless
students are assigned to be at the machine.
Students may not touch, stand near machines to
which they are not currently assigned.
Consumables will be pre-counted into plastic
baggies, issued at beginning of the unit,
becoming student responsibility.
Loss or damage of consumables is an employability
deduction (marked in assignment book).
Repeat loss or damage of consumables will result
in a note home, parent conference.
Loss or damage of Major Equipment will prevent
class form being dismissed until security is
notified, has made an investigation.
35
If horseplay was involved in an
incident, students will be referred to admin for
discipline, removal from class.
