Carbohydrates, proteins and fats and oils are all
types of food. That means that they provide the
body with energy. Carbohydrates are the main
source of energy for most people. They are made
up of starch and sugar.
Vitamins and minerals do not provide the body
with energy, but they are needed for a balanced
diet. The body uses vitamins and minerals to
make essential molecules. When we do not get
enough minerals or vitamins we can sometimes
become unwell.
Roughage is sometimes also called fibre. It is
made up of cellulose that is found in fruit and
vegetables. It allows the digestive system to
remain in healthy, working order by giving the
materials that are passing through bulk. This
gives the muscles of the intestines something to
push against.
Fats and oils and proteins can also provide
energy for the body, but they also have other
jobs. Fats and oils can act as an energy store
and are also needed to make cell membranes.
Energy can also be supplied by proteins, but
mainly they provide materials for growth and
repair.
A balanced diet is made up of seven things. They
are carbohydrate, protein, fats and oils,
minerals, vitamins, roughage and water.
Finally, the body requires water for a balanced
diet. Without water, we can become dehydrated
and die in approximately 3 days.
