3Explore reference literature visually
The Galaxy view
Terms List Search
Use RefViz with your favorite online resources
and EndNote, ProCite and Reference Manager. A
search for herbs and garden or medicin or
farm produces a Galaxy overview of 2,232
references. In this view all references are
selected and represented by yellow dots. The
paper icon identifies a group of references.

4Reveal trends and associations in references
The Galaxy view organizes references according to
how they are related conceptually.
References on farming and herbs, either their
cultivation or use as herbicides, are found in
the upper left region of the Galaxy.
Groups in the lower right focus on herbs in
medicine.
The region in between farming and medicine
contains a mix of references about herbage diets
in farm animals, herbal extracts from plants, and
research on health effects of herbicide exposure.
5Use the Search tool to focus on areas of interest
Use Quick Search or field-specific searches to
locate a topic throughout the overview.
References represented by yellow dots contain the
term asthma. Herbs are associated with asthma
both as a cause (farmers exposed to herbicides)
in the upper left region of the Galaxy and a
treatment (herbal therapy for asthmatics) in the
lower right.

6Highlight associations with the Matrix view
Terms vs terms Review which subjects tend to
be discussed together in the literature. Groups
vs terms An at-a-glance overview of the major
concepts discussed across groups.
All terms found in references about asthma are
highlighted in red. Red cells at the
intersections of the columns and rows indicate
the corresponding terms are often discussed
together in the reference set. Blue cells
indicate few references contain both terms.
White cells indicate no significant association
in either direction.
7Obtain an at-a-glance overview of major concepts
- Review the subjects which tend to appear
together in literature - Understand the overlap and associations
between concepts - Note the co-occurrence of pediatric, school,
asthma, and allergic with terms like alternative
or complementary therapy (i.e., herbal
medicine). - A quick scan of the selected references confirms
the use of alternative medicine in the treatment
of asthma and allergies is on the rise in
pediatric medicine.
8Use additional tools to fine tune results
- Keyword/Term tools designate term importance to
influence group assignments using your domain
expertise.
- Reference Viewer browse references in a
single-line display. Or, open and view the
complete reference.
- Thesaurus customize a pre-defined synonym list.
- Advisor use an interactive Help system.
9Publish results faster
- Send references from RefViz to EndNote, ProCite,
and Reference Manager and publish your results
