South Africa has also launched an initiative to
overcome the skills shortage. One way in which
we hope to start addressing this skills crisis is
through the Joint Initiative on Priority Skills
Acquisition, a joint initiative by government,
tertiary education institutions and business to
help identify scarce skills and develop
programmes through which to obtain these skills.
We have to overcome the shortage of suitable
skilled labour if our dreams for this economy are
to be realised the task ahead is huge.Phumzile
Mlambo-Ngcuka at the Keidanren Roundtable in
Tokyo, 19 April 2006.
26
As we speak we believe that our economy has to
grow at a minimum of 6 of the Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) per annum by 2010. If only we can
get the skills alignment right and a skills
revolution going.Address delivered by the Deputy
President, Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, at the
Third Annual Julius Nyerere Memorial Lecture, at
the University of the Western Cape, Library
Auditorium
We are of the firm view that, if we can deal
effectively with these skills shortages in the
areas mentioned, we will set our country on the
correct path of economic progress, stability and
the Skills Revolution which will in turn ensure
that the greatest majority of our people become
full players in the economic activities of our
country. We shall be fielding the full South
African team.Address delivered by the Deputy
President, Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, at the
National Council of Provinces, Moshaneng
Municipality Hall, Kgalagadi District, Kuruman,
Northern Cape Province
27
We have opened a register for South Africans in
the diasporas, the South Africans who had left
the country with skills, to be able to indicate
to them the available work possibilities in the
country so that we can attract those kind of
skills back in the country. So it is skills, a
people issueBriefing of the media by President
Mbeki on the mid-year Cabinet Lekgotla, Union
Buildings 30 July 2006
Im harping a lot on skills because that is the
issue that is giving me sleepless nights, she
told ambassadors, high commissioners and business
people in Johannesburg on Wednesday. Phumzile
Mlambo-Ngcuka May 10 2006
