EESI and EMS strengths We are one of the only

EESI Helps Capitalize on these Strengths by

EESI History
  • Began as the Earth System Science Center (ESSC)
    in 1985 when Eric Barron came to PSU as first
    ESSC director
  • Brought together faculty in the Departments of
    Geosciences, Meteorology, Geography, Energy,
    Environmental, and Mineral Economics
  • First centers CIRA and CECG in 1998

  • Hire an ecohydrologist who can integrate
    understanding of life systems and human impacts
    on the water cycle.
  • This faculty member could find an academic home
    in Geography, Geosciences, or Meteorology.
  • Experience with remote sensing, spatially
    explicit modeling, and/or field-based data
    collection would be helpful and would enable
    linkages between large-scale climate modelers and
    field researchers.

  • Hire a hydrometeorologist who can translate
    global variations in climate into local
    variations in weather and consequent water
  • The most likely academic home would be in the
    Department of Meteorology, but the faculty member
    would be encouraged to work across disciplines
    both within and outside of EMS.

    quantitative statistics and translation of these
    results across disciplines are desirable.
  • Familiarity with risk and decision theory
    research would be an attractive attribute for
    this hire.

Pennsylvania Water Resources Research Center (E.
Boyer, Director)
  • In partnership with USGS and authorized by
    Congress as one of the nations 54 water
    resources research Institutes comprising the
    national institutes of water resources (NIWR)
  • PA-WRRI receives federal funding (from the USGS)
    that is then distributed in a small grants
    competition to researchers at universities across
  • NIWR works to secure that funding through
    congressional appropriations, and our center is
    working to increase local funding for small
    grants through partnerships (e.g., SeaGrant). 
  • Current issues of interest / research include
    hydrofracing and shale exploration for natural
    gas (e.g. Marcellus),  land conversion (e.g,.
    shift to biofuel crops), nutrient pollution, and
    climate change.    
  • Working currently to connect the research
    expertise at universities across Pennsylvania
    with a new database, new website (forthcoming),
    and bi-annual symposium (in May - we hope for
    lots of PSU participation as it will be at the
    Penn Stater).
