Introduction
  • The Rosebud Sioux Tribes Traffic Crash
    Information reviews traffic crash data from
    January 1, 2003 through December 31, 2005 that
    occurred on the Rosebud Reservation located in
    South Central South Dakota. It presents crash
    data in the form of graphs and tables. Maps are
    provided where a geographic perspective is
    useful.
  • The statistics shown in the publication reflect
    only those crashes that occurred on the Rosebud
    Reservation and resulted in death, personal
    injury, or 1,000 or more in property damage
    according to the officers investigation.
  • The information found in this report involving
    the Rosebud Reservation was compiled using CISCO
    (Creative Information Systems Company) Software
    and the reports of the uniformed officers crash
    reports. These reports were compiled and
    processed by the Highway Safety Division and
    Administrative Staff of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe
    Law Enforcement Services.
  • Information contained in this Traffic Crash
    Information booklet is compiled from the Rosebud
    Reservation only. Information on vehicle crashes
    occurring on the Rosebud Reservation involving
    death is shared with the state of South Dakota
    and in some cases crashes involving property
    damage over 1,000.

Definitions
  • The following is a list of terms and associated
    definitions that appear throughout this report.
  • Alcohol involved - a crash which the uniform
    accident report indicated that
  • A D.U.I. arrest was executed.
  • Alcohol was a contributing factor to the crash.
  • The driver or pedestrian involved had been
    drinking.
  • Driver - drivers do not include pedal cyclists or
    pedestrians.
  • Fatal Crash - a crash in which at least one
    individual was killed.
  • Fatalities - Number of individuals killed in a
    crash.
  • Injured - the number of people injured in a
    crash.
  • Injury Crash - a crash in which at least one
    individual was injured.
  • Property Damage - a crash that involves damage
    exceeding 1,000 or more. This includes
    non-injury crashes.
  • Tribal Member - an individual who is enrolled
    with the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.
  • Local Resident - a non-enrolled member who lives
    on the Rosebud Reservation.
  • Resident - individual who lives in the state of
    South Dakota.
  • Non-Resident - individual who does not live in
    the state of South Dakota.
  • R.S.T. - Rosebud Sioux Tribe
  • Traffic Crash - crash involving one or more
    vehicles.
  • Vehicle-Pedestrian crash vehicle crash
    involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

  • Of the 10 fatalities, no seat belts were used
  • 6 of the 10 fatalities were under The influence
    of Alcohol
  • 3 out of 10 fatality crashes involved 2 (or more)
    vehicles
  • 100 of the people killed in traffic crashes on
    the Rosebud Sioux Reservation from
    January 1 December 31, 2003 were not
    wearing seat belts
  • 60 of the people killed in traffic crashes on
    the Rosebud Sioux Reservation from
    January 1 December 31, 2003 were
    under the influence of alcohol
  • 30 of the fatality crashes involved more than 1
    vehicle
