Title: Nursing Research

1
Nursing Research
  • Dr. Reema Safadi -Doghmi

2
Definitions
  • Nursing research is systematic inquiry designed
to develop knowledge about issues of importance
to nurses, including nursing practice, nursing
    education, and nursing administration (Polit,
    Beck Hungler, 2001).
  • Nursing research is concerned with knowledge that
    directly and indirectly influences clinical
    nursing practice (Burns Grove, 1997).

3
  • The most objective and reliable source of nursing
    knowledge is obtained through scientific
research. According to Polit and Hungler (1995),
the scientific approach is "a general set of
orderly, disciplined procedures used to acquire
    dependable and useful information". The
scientific method used empirical data, which are
data gathered through the sense organs.

4
The three basic elements of scientific method
are
  • Skepticism doubt and analysis.
  • Determinism events occur according to regular
laws and causes, not a result of caprices of
    demons or witches (cause-effect)
  • Empiricism inquiry ought to be conducted
    through observation and verified through
    experience.

5
The scientific Method Model
  • Observations Hypotheses Theories.

6
  • Similarities between scientific research and the
    problem solving approach
  • Both processes involve identifying a problem area
    a research question.
  • Establishing a plan research design.
  • Collecting data.

7
  • The purpose for problem solving attempts to seek
a solution to an immediate, actual problem that
exists for a person or for persons in a given
    setting.
  • The purpose of scientific research is much
broader it seeks to obtain knowledge that can be
generalized to other people and to other settings.

8
Goals for conducting nursing research
  • Improvement in nursing care service based on
knowledge, scientific research as the most
    reliable means of obtaining knowledge.
  • Clinical nursing research parallels the Nursing
Process should be conducted in the area of
    assessment, planning, nursing diagnosis, nursing
intervention and evaluation of nursing care.
Research findings enable the nurse to describe,
explain, predict and control phenomena related to
    the health of clients.

9
  • Credibility of the nursing profession One of the
criteria for a profession is the existence of a
body of knowledge that is distinct from that of
    other disciplines.

10
  • Accountability for nursing practice To be
accountable for practice means that nurses must
have sound rationales for their actions based on
knowledge that is gained through scientific
    research.

11
  • Documentation of the cost effectiveness of
nursing care consumers of health care need to be
made aware of the importance of nursing care in
relation to maintaining the health of well
clients and in promoting the recovery and
rehabilitation of ill clients. Studies that are
involved in health promoting behaviors and its
    relation with cutting costs.

12
Roles of nurses in research
  • Indirect by being consumers of research

Producers of research
13
Roles of nurses in research
  • Principle investigator beginning researcher can
conduct a small scale survey study.
  • Member of a research team act as data collector
    or administer the experimental intervention
  • Evaluator of research findings determine the
usefulness of research findings in the practice
    area critique research articles (beginners).

14
  • User of research findings after evaluating
research findings, nurses should use relevant
findings in their practice. The results of one
small study conducted with a sample of volunteers
would not provide sufficient evidence for a
    change in nursing practice.
  • Clinical advocate during studies making sure
that the ethical aspects of research are uphold.
  • Subjects in studies nurses can be chosen as
subjects because they could report exposures and
diseases more accurately than general people.

15
  • Nursing research provides a specialized
scientific knowledge base that empowers the
nursing profession to anticipate and meet these
constantly shifting challenges and maintain our
    societal relevance.
