Title: A Day of Guided Reading in 3rd Grade

1
A Day of Guided Reading in 3rd Grade
  • Hart Elementary School
  • April 3rd, 2008
  • Andrea Frasier

2
Guided Reading What Why?
  • 3rd grade teachers spent the day immersed in
    discussing, organizing, and planning guided
    reading
  • We began by reading an article about guided
reading and discussed it using a reciprocal
    teaching strategy

3
Organizing Groups
  • Each teacher brought their DRA scores.
  • We looked at scores to determine guided reading
    groups.
  • Students organized groups on a chart and
developed a plan for managing the groups.

4
Selecting Books
5
A Trip to the Book Room!
6
Teachers Used The Charts to Select Books for
Guided Reading Lessons
7
A Model Lesson
  • I modeled a guided reading lesson in a 3rd grade
    classroom.
  • I used the text Fireflies by Julie Brinckloe.

8
Activating Background Knowledge
  • I shared background knowledge that I had for
    catching fireflies.
  • Students recorded background knowledge they had
on a post-it. Then we shared.

9
I displayed their post-its on the chart to show
that I valued their thinking to make it visible
for others.
10
Vocabulary
We discussed the meaning of some important words
from the story and shared examples of what these
verbs looked liked in action.
11
Making Predictions
I previewed the text with a picture walk. We
recorded our predictions on the chart.
12
Inferring the Lesson Learned
  • Students read the text silently and independently
  • The objective was to use the actions and words of
the character to infer the lesson he learned in
    the story
  • I listened and took notes as each student
whisper-read portions of the text to to me

13
Post-Reading
  • Students who finished reading, recorded evidence
from the text on the response chart
  • They selected details to show how the character
felt at the beginning, middle, and end of the
    story
  • We confirmed predictions and discussed the lesson
    learned by the character

14
Debrief
  • Teachers shared notes/observations they made.
  • I reported out first about the lesson.

15
Leveling Books
They used a website to identify the levels of
some of their books.
3rd grade teachers brought in books from their
classrooms.
16
Organizing Books
The teachers organized many of the texts by color
coding baskets.
Not all books are organized by level! Some are by
author, genre, topic, etc.!!!!
