VT Water Power History
  • Our water ways have been used for mechanical
power since the earliest European settlers
  • For sawmills, gristmills, cotton mills, carding
mills, and producers of machine tools, scales,
    paper, and pulp

3
How much and from what?
  • as late as 1940, 90 percent of Vermont's needs
were met by stations operating solely on water
    power
  • In 1999 29.4 of our power was hydroelectric
  • 10.8 was from utilities
  • 18.7 was from non-utilties
  • Today Vermont uses 1000 mw a day

Some VT Hydro Stations

Comerford Station whose four large generators
produce 164 megawatts of power
7
  • The Vernon station whose eight turbines produce
    22 megawatts of electric power

8
  • The Bellows Falls station whose three generating
units draw on water flowing through the historic
1791 canal and produce 49 megawatts of electric
    power

9
  • The Wilder station, consisting of a 2,900-feet
long dam and three generators which produce 42
    megawatts of power

10
  • The Moore Station, the largest hydro-generating
facility on the Connecticut River which
encompasses a 3,490-acre storage reservoir and
whose power output totals 192 megawatts

11
  • McIndoes Station whose 13 megawatts of power
serve primarily to smooth the uneven water flows
which result from the Comerford stations
    operation

Government Model of Hydro Resources in VT
  • There are 29 dams that produce power with a
potential of 62.9 mw and modeled 31.8mw
  • There are 70 dams without power with a potential
of 261.4 mw and modeled 131.1mw
  • There are 50 undeveloped sites with a potential
of 90.1 mw and modeled 11.7mw

16
Semi Current Events
  • VT had a chance to buy 8 hydro dams in VT
  • 2 on the Deerfield River and 6 on the Connecticut
    River
  • Total of 527mw or 50 of our power
