  • Polymers are expected to perform in a variety of
    applications. Fabricators of polymer products
    must know what to expect from the plastics they
    put into their products. A number of physical and
    chemical tests can provide needed information
    about how polymers might behave in use. Tensile
    strength measurements yield information about a
    plastics resistance to elongation or breaking
    when a pulling force is applied

Procedure
  • Cut standard size strips from different types of
    plastics to be used by the test machine.
  • Size of the machine is not critical as long as it
    is the same
  • Fasten the sample and crank until it snaps. Note
    the force needed to snap
  • Repeat with other samples to see which has the
    highest tensile strength

Discussion
The final test of a polymer is how well the
product survives under actual use. Many tests are
designed and applied by manufactures to predict
this behavior. A common test is for tensile
strength. Tensile strength is a measure of a
polymers resistance to being pulled apart.
Different tensile strengths can be build into a
polymer by varying its molecular architecture.
For example, cross linking the polymers
molecules can greatly improve its tensile
strength.
