YOUR PARTICIPATION IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.
8
FACTORS BEYOND OUR CONTROL
  • Age, Gender, Access, tradition/culture

9
Influences on participation
  • Attitudes to all kinds of physical activity are
almost all the result of social and cultural
    differences.
  • These influences can have a positive or negative
influence on participation on sport and activity.

10
AGE
  • Age limits are set on some clubs
  • Separate competitions and coaching
  • There is now a trend for a healthier lifestyle
older people need to stay active (money could be
    an issue)

11
GENDER
  • Males and females are encouraged to take part in
    sport
  • Some clubs only offer single sex teams
  • Each sex usually competes separately this is
because of differences in size and strength
  • Can you think of activities where male and female
    participate together?

12
ACCESS
  • Are there facilities close by?
  • Is there a cost?
  • Someone may be interested in an activity but if
they have no access to a club then they will find
    it very difficult to do.
  • When facilities in an area are good then interest
is usually higher and the standard increases
    because of the numbers participating.

13
TRADITION AND CULTURE
  • Many areas have a traditional sport that can be
    part of their cultural heritage.
  • Can you think of some examples?
  • Success in an activity promotes interest and
    therefore more participants.
  • Family traditions will influence children- either
    positively or negatively
  • When there is success in sport money can become
available from the local authority or private
    sponsors.
  • In the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics the British
Curling teams were made up entirely of Scottish
    players.
