1
Subject Leader Meeting - ICT
2
Background to school self evaluation
  • Objectives
  • To explain the background to School Self
    Evaluation
  • To understand the connection between Department
Self evaluation and School Self Evaluation
  • To identify some of the actions which can support
self evaluation and how these can be implemented
    in an ICT department

3
Setting the context
  • Ofsted believes schools are best placed to
recognise their own strengths and weaknesses. The
new inspection system puts greater onus on
schools to be proactive and demonstrate to
inspectors that it can not only diagnose where
its strengths and weaknesses lie but, more
crucially, can do something about improving and
    developing them
  • Ofsted Direct Spring 2005

4
Strengthening self evaluation
  • As part of the New Relationship with Schools,
schools are being encouraged to adopt rigorous
    self-evaluation procedures. The new Ofsted
    Self-evaluation form (SEF) includes
  • Part A Self-evaluation
  • Part B Factual information about your school
  • Part C Information about compliance with
    Statutory Requirements

5
The self-evaluation form (SEF)
  • The SEF asks schools
  • To evaluate their progress against an inspection
    schedule
  • To set out the main evidence on which this
    evaluation is based
  • To identify strengths and weaknesses
  • To explain the action the school is taking to
remedy the weaknesses and develop the strengths

6
Features of an effective approach to school
self-evaluation
  • Draws on quantitative, qualitative and
    comparative information
  • Seeks evidence from the delivery chain, i.e.
senior leaders, subject leaders, teachers and
    pupils
  • Provides information which readily feeds into the
    Ofsted SEF

7
Completing the SEF
  • The head teacher is responsible for making sure
that the school SEF is completed
  • It is an on-line document
  • It should be a work in progress rather than a
    summative document
  • The department SEF should feed into the school
    SEF
  • The whole school should be contributing to the
    content of the SEF

8
Ofsted SEF
  • The self-evaluation section includes
  • Characteristics of your school
  • Views of learners, parents/carers and other
    stakeholders
  • Achievements and standards
  • Personal development and well being
  • Quality of provision
  • Leadership and management
  • Overall effectiveness and efficiency

9
What are Ofsted looking at
  • How well do pupils progress in their ICT
    capability?
  • Is pupils progress in ICT monitored and
    summatively and accurately assessed?
  • What is the potential impact of the KS3 on-screen
test on teaching, learning, curriculum planning
and the strategic management of ICT?
  • Does ICT have a visible and frequent impact on
the learning and achievement of pupils across the
curriculum and in a wide range of contexts?
  • Is ICT a frequent and natural part of learning
    and teaching?

10
Ofsted
  • Does the curriculum and access to resources,
enable pupils to develop and apply all aspects of
their capability, using a wide range of
applications at appropriate times across all
    subjects
  • Is there an innovative and inclusive vision which
anticipates future developments in practice and
    technology?
  • Are current and developing practices in the use
of ICT, within and beyond the school,
systematically and routinely evaluated for their
    impact?

11
Activity 1
  • In pairs, discuss the activities that are needed
in order to collect evidence for the SEF.
  • List these activities on the sheet provided for
    activity 1
  • RAG each activity to show how well developed it
    is in your department

12
Activity 2
  • Who should be involved?
  • Take each of the activities you have listed and
identify the people who need to be involved
  • What implications does this have for self
    evaluation in your department

13
Conclusion
  • To explain the background to School Self
    Evaluation
  • To understand the connection between Department
Self evaluation and School Self Evaluation
  • To identify some of the actions which can support
self evaluation and how these can be implemented
    in an ICT department
