I HAVE A Dream
the Holy Grail
of Intelligent Distance Education
3
Web Intelligent Student Distance-education Model
4
Research Vision
  • "A virtual university should be, to the learner,
a distance learning environment that is capable
of being transmitted via the world wide web by an
intelligent tool that is intuitive to use, a
simulation of the real-world learning experience
and, at all stages, interacts with the learner's
    changing profile".

KISSing education Keep It Simple Stupid
5
Ideal Goals - Objectives
  • Low and high skill learners
  • Self-directed learning
  • Changing profile intelligent interaction

6
Distance Learning Today
  • Tools exist now?
  • Definition of a virtual university is it?
  • How does a learner learn?

7
Distance Learning Today
Tools exist in the market ?? Facilities for
learners.
  • Self-directed Learning support materials
  • Communication tools
  • Asynchronous
  • Synchronous
  • Assessment tools
  • The most popular DLT today is Blackboard

8
Distance Learning Today
Definition of a Virtual University is it?
  • A direct provider of learning opportunities to
    learners using
  • Self-directed learning
  • Asynchronous Synchronous communication
  • between learners and teachers at a distance from
the source to deliver programs, courses and
    provide tuition support.
  • A Real-World University also provides
    intelligent real-time interaction!!!

9
Distance Learning Today
How does a learner learn?
  • Learners have different characteristics.
  • Low and high skill very different.
  • Sensory input /or physical interactions.
  • Several simultaneous learning experience.
  • Self-directed, asynchronous, synchronous.
  • By finding out (not being told).
  • Being intelligently directed.
  • Evaluation and implementation of distance
    learning technologies, tools and techniques
(2000) France Belanger and Dianne H. Jordan

10
How Did We Get Here?
  • Distance learning
  • Artificial intelligence

11
How Did We Get Here?
Development of Distance Learning
  • 1959 - first true educational television program
    - Sunrise Semester, Chicago.
  • 1970 - California funded a two-year task force to
    design "telecourse" of the future.
  • 1987 - Glenn Jones launched M/EU a cable channel
    with education programs.
  • 1900s meteoric rise in Internet popularity.
  • 1990 - December over 10million web sites.

12
How Did We Get Here?
Development of Artificial Intelligence
  • Expert systems developed in mid 1960s
  • Emerging protocols - CORBA, DCOM, Jini, XML
  • Education/research - AcquireSDK
  • Tools/languages CLIPS, JESS, Common Lisp,
    Prolog, CLP

13
Virtual University AI
Where can Artificial Intelligence be used?
  • Student Profile / Domain Profile overlays
  • Artificial Intelligent Interactive QAs
  • Resource linking
  • WWW search autonomous interface agent
  • Assessment
  • Reporting

14
Virtual University AI
What are the problems?
  • Generic Artificial Intelligence
  • Integration of Experts
  • Domain Experts
  • Expert Engineers
  • Web Developers
  • No KISS Methodology for a Generic Tool

Future Research Development
Tom Murray says of Intelligent Tutoring
Systems
We should expect users to have a reasonable
degree of training in how to use them, on the
order of database programming, CAD-CAM authoring,
3-D modelling or spreadsheet macro scripting.
Expanding the Knowledge Acquisition Bottleneck
for Intelligent Tutoring Systems - 1999
17
Future Research Development
  • Student Profile / Domain Profile overlays
  • Folder/File Hierarchy Profiling
  • Develop a Methodology to allow a Tutor, who is
ONLY a Domain Expert, to create an Intelligent
    Interactive Domain Specific Module.

My research indicates that there are few tutors
who have the required knowledge, or time, to
develop a tutoring system that requires expert
engineering knowledge. Nor are most expert Web
Developers!!!
