Our Goals
  • To give the students the academic and social
    skills they need to progress to fourth grade
    beyond.
  • To provide a supportive and fun classroom
    environment.

We are an IB SchoolWhat does that mean?
  • We will teach integrated IB Units of Inquiry that
    unite the essential elements of IB around
    universally important concepts.

IBhow can you help?
  • You can help by modeling the profile with your
    child.
  • ACTION one component of our IB Planners is
    Action. We do not always see the effects that
    the activities we do in school have. Please
    watch your child and let the teacher know of any
    ways your child is demonstrating skills they
    learned in a recent unit, or how they are
    displaying the IB Profile!

Reading
  • We will use various strategies to teach reading.
  • Students will also be required to use the
    Accelerated Reader Program (beginning in
    September.)

Book Clubs
  • We will be forming book clubs in each class.
  • This is a great way for parents to get involved.
  • Watch for sign up and further information!

Writing
  • Third Grade students are evaluated in March on
    their writing. We will work to teach students
    the skills required to be successful.
  • We will focus on different types of writing,
    including Personal Narrative, Expository,
    Persuasive, etc.

Math
  • New Math skills are introduced this year,
    including multiplication division.
  • Students should have mastered addition
    subtraction basics by now.
  • You can help by making or purchasing flashcards
    for your child practice, practice, practice!

Everyday Math
  • There is a big home component in Everyday Math.
  • Please complete Home Links with your student as
    needed.
  • We would like for you to purchase Home Links
    books for your child. The cost is 6.00. The
    teachers have already ordered the books, so
    please pay your childs teacher.

First in Math
  • The program involves on-line challenges for the
    students.
  • Students practice their skills with games
    drills.
  • The Finance Committee is reviewing a proposal, so
    pricing will be available soon.
  • First In Math Online Program

  • Brandon PTA is purchasing Study Island for all of
    our students.
  • Study Island is a leading provider of web-based
    state assessment preparation programs and
    standards based learning programs.
  • CRCT style practice on-line.

Science
  • A lot of our IB units are based around Science.
  • We have Field Trips planned to support the
    curriculum.
  • Sign up sheets will be available during PTA Open
    House, 9/6/07.

Social Studies
  • Again, IB Units have been designed to incorporate
    Social Studies into the classroom.
  • Field Trips include a visit to The Jimmy Carter
    Library and The Funk Heritage Center.

Connections SciTech
  • These are new specials added this year to the
    rotation.
  • Connections Last year this class was called
    Enrichment and is taught by Kelley
    Jordan-Monne.
  • SciTech will focus on Science Computers and
    will be taught by Chrystal Washington.

Homework
  • Third Graders will be assigned about 30 minutes
    of homework every night (Monday-Thursday). They
    should also complete another 20 minutes of
    reading.
  • Homework is due daily the students are
    responsible for writing their homework
    assignments in their agenda.
  • Please do not do your childs homework for him or
    her and do not sit beside him or her as they
    complete each assignment. In third grade students
    must learn that it is their responsibility.
  • If you notice your child taking extra time to
    work on homework, please discuss that with the
    teacher.

Projects
  • We are planning for six projects this yeara
    project to go along with each IB unit.
  • Project guidelines, rubrics, and due dates will
    be provided well in advance.

Tutoring
  • Each member of the 3rd Grade Team offers small
    group tutoring. Please contact your childs
    teacher for dates times.
  • Tutoring is not a permanent situation, but if you
    think your child is struggling in a subject area,
    we are here to help!

Classroom Community
  • Our classroom is a community. In our community,
    we have Essential Agreements to help us respect
    one another.
  • Teachers students have discussed the Essential
    Agreements at the beginning of the year so
    everyone is clear on what is expected.

Grading Policy/Teacherease
  • APS has updated the grading policy.
  • This new policy will be available shortly.
  • We will make our grade books available to parents
    on line at a later date. This will enable you to
    view progress, missing assignments, etc.

Attendance
  • Please send your student to school, on-time every
    day.
  • If you have to make an appointment, please
    schedule it after 11 am.
  • We need your children to be in our classrooms! ?

Birthdays
  • Birthday parties for the student should be
    celebrated during their scheduled lunch period.
  • You may bring a treat to the children in the
    cafeteria.
  • Please let the teacher know if when you are
    planning to celebrate your childs birthday.
