Title: Intercountry Workshop on Developing A Regional Strategy For Integrated Vector Management For Malaria

1
Inter-country Workshop on Developing A
Regional Strategy For Integrated Vector
Management For Malaria And Other Vector-Borne
Diseases
  • Update on Long Lasting Insecticide-treated Nets
  • Grand Holiday Villa Hotel, Khartoum, Sudan
  • January 21 - 23, 2003
  • Mohammadou Kabir Cham, RBM WHO Malaria Department

2
Long Lasting Insecticide-treated Nets
  • A ready-to-use factory pre-treated net, which
requires no further re-treatment during its
    expected life span (4-5 years)
  • There are basically two types of LLITNs
  • with insecticide incorporated into fibre (e.g.
    Olyset Net)
  • with a resin coating the fibre (e.g. PermaNet)
  • There is an equilibrium between insecticide
concentration inside the fibre or resin and at
    surface

3
LLINs Under Development
  • Commercially available
  • PermaNet, 2nd generation yet to be submitted to
    WHOPES
  • DAWA
  • Advanced processes 3 (binding), 1 compatible
    with several insecticides
  • Developing processes 3 (incorporation and
    binding)
  • Several other companies actively involved in RD
    programmes

4
Which LLITNs to Order?
  • Only those recommended by WHO
  • If not available
  • buy conventional nets, preferably untreated with
insecticide treatment kit bundled with the net
  • If obvious re-treatment problems are expected
  • you may consider purchasing factory pre-treated
    nets
