• Amateurism was the dominant force in Britain
  established by the upper classes through public

• Amateurism concerned with the taking part
  winning not seen as important no monetary gain
• Fair play, respect, sportsmanship
• Amateurs middle and upper classes
• Professionals lower classes

• Professional sport can be traced back to
  Ancient Rome (Gladiators paid for performing,
  serious training, entertainment to the masses)
• Amateurism seen as better than professionalism
• Concept of professional sport looked down upon
  social class divide
• Working classes needed to be paid to play
• Broken-time payments eventually led to
  professionalization of sports.
• Amateurs disagreed with payments led to
  conflict one reason for rugby split
