3- Hyde Ballast Water Treatment History
- 1996 - Teamed up with the University of Michigan
to study technologies for BWT, for ships
operating in the Great Lakes - 1997 - Hyde was the engineering contractor for
the Great Lakes Ballast Technology Demonstration
Project , one of the first BWT research programs
in North America - 2000 Hyde installed what was probably the
FIRST full scale BWT system aboard the cruise
ship M/S Regal Princess - 2001 - Four additional systems installed, two
on cruise ships and one each on a container ship
and parcel chemical tanker
4 Hyde Ballast Water Treatment History

5The Hyde GUARDIAN Ballast Water Treatment System
is a fully automated two stage treatment process
1st Stage - Disc filtration 2nd
Stage - UV disinfectionThe Hyde GUARDIAN uses
no chemicals or active substances!
Simple, Safe and Effective Technology
6Sized and configured forany size or type of
vessel
- Hyde GUARDIAN product range covers the
capacities from 60m3/h to 6000m3/h. - Standard models are available from 60m3/h to

models from 60m3/h to 500m3/h (as option)
7Modular Design for limited available space
- Modular systems are recommended for retrofit
projects and for vessels where the space is
strongly limited - The Hyde GUARDIAN can fit into whatever space is
available by separating the modules - filter, UV,
and electric panels.Very low pressure drop -
allows - existing ballast pumps to be used.
8- Explosion-Proof systems are available for
installations in hazardous areas. - The Treatment system is located in the hazardous
area - Electrical panels located in the safe zone.

13Easy to Fit
Fitting has never been this easy for BWT
units. 3 alternative configurations for
filter battery Parallel, Single Line, Stacked
UV unit can be placed to any Position,
horizontal-vertical and to any place downstream
the filtered water
14Very Low Operating Cost
- Low Power Consumption
- Low Maintenance
- Extremely Low Consumables
-
- Less than 0.015 per cubic meter of
ballast water processed - Low Total Cost of Ownership!
151st Stage Depth Filtration
- After testing many different filter designs, Hyde
Marine chose auto-backflush disk filters based on
overall performance, reliability, and value.
Benefits - Compact and simple design
- Fully automatic backflushing
- Corrosion free materials
- Low pressure drop 0.3-0.7 bar
- Very little maintenace needed
- Practically no spare parts needed
- Explosion proof
- Long Service Life
16Galaxy Filter Design
- Galaxy configuration consist of single Disc
Filter Elements. Two alternative - Galaxies 4 for 50m3/h and
- 6 for 80m3/h
- These Galaxy modules are forming the Filter
Battery, where the size and number of Galaxy
modules are matching with the ballast flow rate. - Filtration Process
- Water flows from inlet manifold, through the
3-way valves to the Galaxy modules. Filtered
water flows into the outlet manifold and to the
UV System.
17 Filter Operation
- During Filtration mode, each stack of nylon discs
is tightly compressed together to create a filter
element. - Grooves on top and bottom of the each disc create
efficient physical barricade for solid particles. - Ballast water flows from outside to inside of
each filter element. - When differential pressure grows up to 0.7 bar
automatic back-flushing cycle begins.
18 Filter Operation
- During Backflush mode, the compression of stacked
discs is released. - Filtered ballast water flows through jet nozzles
on the spine from inside to outside of each
filter element. - The energetic spray causes discs to spin and
- release the retained solids, which are
- flushed out to the drain line.
- One complete Galaxy dome with multiple
- filter stacks is flushed in 10 to 20 seconds
- and differential pressure over the filter
- returns to designed 0.3 bar.
19 Energetic backflushing
Filtration mode Backflushing mode
takes 10
seconds / Galaxy
makes 1 water loss
20Galaxy Filter Design
- Automatic Backflush Process
- Backflush begins automatically when pressure
differential reaches 0.7 Bar - The GUARDIAN booster pump starts automatically
to provide sufficient pressure for a fast and
effective backwashing. - One Galaxy module at a time is Cleaned in 10 to
20 seconds, flushing trapped solids out the drain
line and overboard. - Backflushing proceeds for each Galaxy module
until the complete and the system returns to
filtration mode.
212nd Stage UV Disinfection
- Medium Pressure UV Treatment.
- The compact design has the smallest footprint of
any UV system and operates with virtually no
pressure drop. - Treatment Chamber design and lamp geometry for
all models are based on CFD modeling to ensure
precise fluid flow and optimal UV energy dosage. - This UV system design is ideal when space is
critical, flow is high, water quality varies.
Lamps operate effectively and reliably at
temperatures ranging from -20 to 80 degrees
Celsius

23- Proven Reliable
- Long Life UV Lamps
- Hyde Medium Pressure UV system provides excellent
economy and true reliability ? life time of
UV-lamps is 4000 - 8000 hours! - Automatic Sleeve Cleaning to Minimize
Maintenance - Effective and Automatic teflon wiper mechanism
cleans the quartz tubes regularly to maintain
high UV dosage and to prolongs the lifetime of
the tubes. Cleaning is carried out without
chemicals. -
24Automatic detection for Turbidity, automatic
power saving feature with 3 alternative UV power
