  • We have a large workforce of skilled and
    experienced professionals

7
Differing Models
  • We have learnt that there is no magic wand
solution, and that one size does not fit all
  • There is significant variation in the service
models adopted across our 12 PCTs
  • Drop-in sessions versus one-to-one support
  • Combination of Specialist, Pharmacist and other
    Primary Care settings
  • Prescribing protocols

8
Differing Models
  • However, there is also significant variation in
    the outcomes achieved by Services
  • We need to understand local differences, but also
acknowledge that there is a strong evidence base
    for best practice
  • All NICE-approved medication to be available
    first line
  • Use of combination therapies
  • Availability of Group Support where appropriate
  • Encourage the wider NHS to promote the LSSS
  • Increase the number of settings for support

9
Summary
  • We know that using NHS Stop Smoking Services
quadruples the chances of smokers quitting
    successfully
  • The North East has a record of success to be
proud of, but must keep adapting in order to
    prosper
  • 175,000 people have reason to be grateful to the
    services for helping them quit
  • Conservative estimate of 27,000 lives saved
across the North East over the last decade
