• At the end of WWII, there are two major players
  in the world with two very different ideas on
  government. Both fear that the other will try to
  take control.
• Democratic U.S.A.
• Communist Soviet Union (Russia)

• The term cold war comes from the fact that
  there was never really any fighting-unlike WWI,
  and WWII.
• Europe was divided by the Iron Curtain
• East of the curtain was communism, west of the
  curtain was democracy.

• The Berlin Wall in Germany actually divided the
  city of Berlin between democratic West and
  communist East.
• The split is Eastern Europe because the Allies of
  WWII (US, GB, Soviet Union) disagree on how
  Eastern Europe should be

• Truman and Stalin clash over the Yalta Conference
  agreement

• Cold War lasts for 46 years.
• Truman opposes Communist expansion
• Truman Doctrine-promised aid to nations
  struggling against communism

  anywhere else. Went with the Truman Doctrine
  wonderfully.

• Response to Stalins stopping of all highway,
  railway, and waterway traffic
• Idea was that if Western Berlin couldnt get any
  aid, it would have to fall to Communism
• U.S.A. and Great Britain supplied West Germany
  through an airlift.

  after WWII
• North Korea was a Soviet satellite
• South Korea was U.S. ally

• U.S. Defends South Korea, UN joins
• China sides with North Korea and forces a
  stalemate
• War was a limited war.
