4
Podcasts and Vodcasts
  • Digital audio and video files distributed over
    the Internet
  • Download and use the content on a computer or a
mobile device such as an iPod or an MP3 player
  • Available through direct download from websites
    or through a subscription feed
  • Podcasting software iTunes, Juice, iPodder
    needed to subscribe
  • Once downloaded, the podcasts and vodcasts are
    not limited to online use

5
Podcasts and Vodcasts
  • Pod- and vodcasting are based on RSS, the
    software that makes subscription possible
  • RSS is server-side, not local software
  • NSU uses Drupal open source software
  • Digital audio can be converted to an MP3 file, a
    format recognized by RSS
  • Digital video can be converted to a variety of
    formats that RSS can deliver
  • The RSS file includes text that describes your
MP3 or video file for the potential user

Sources of Content
  • AESP specializes in professional development
workshops in the areas of science, mathematics,
geography, and technology education. They are
    provided at no cost.

9
Sources of Content
  • Workshops introduce participants to hands-on
activities and NASA curriculum support materials
including educator guides, videos, and technology
    products. Aerospace Education Specialists
customize all workshops to meet each state's
    standards.

Sources of Content
  • The NASA Web Site
  • NASA.gov serves as the gateway for information on
    missions, research, programs, and services
offered by NASA. The educational sections provide
educators access to curriculum support materials
    and resources produced through collaborations
    with NASA's mission directorates. Educator
    guides, classroom activities, posters,
lithographs, brochures, and bookmarks may be
downloaded and printed from the following
    location

Sources of Content
  • Four Easy Ways to Obtain NASA Educational
    Materials
  • The NASA Office of Education works
    collaboratively with NASA's mission directorates
to promote education as an integral component of
every major NASA research and development
mission. These efforts result in innovative and
    informative educational materials that engage
    student interest in science, technology,
    engineering, and mathematics.

15
Sources of Content
  • Access educational resources online from NASA's
    Web site.
  • http//www.nasa.gov/education/materials
  • Visit a NASA Educator Resource Center (ERC).
  • http//www.nasa.gov/education/ercn

16
Sources of Content
  • Order select materials through OfficeMax.
    http//www.nasa.gov/education/officemax
  • Purchase materials from the Central Operation of
    Resources for Educators (CORE).
  • http//www.nasa.gov/education/core

17
Sources of Content
  • NASAs Teaching From Space Program
  • allows the ISS crewmembers to perform
    curriculum-based activities in space to
demonstrate basic principles of science, math,
engineering and geography and answer questions
    real-time from students on Earth.

18
Sources of Content
  • NASA Education EXPRESS E-mail Sign-up
  • Sign up for announcements about NASA products and
    activities.

19
Example of Content
  • NASA Brain Bites
  • One-minute videos answer some of the questions
about space you were afraid to ask
  • http//brainbites.nasa.gov

20
Sources of Content
  • Podcast directories are searchable and generally
    organized into subject matter categories
  • Some more academically oriented than others

Finding Content A Caution
  • Podcasts and vodcasts are easy and inexpensive to
    create
  • Anyone can and does publish them
  • Files containing adult content, extreme views,
    and inaccurate information are common
  • As with all online content, instructors must be
    cautious

24
Other Considerations
  • Be aware of students Internet access limitations
  • Residential or commuter campus
  • Urban, suburban, or rural setting
  • Number of students with Internet access in their
    residences

25
Creating Podcasts and Vodcasts
