Title: Prevalence of Morbid Obesity and Cardiovascular Risk from NHANES
1Prevalence of Morbid Obesity and Cardiovascular
Risk from NHANES
- Adapted fromMondolfi et al. Am J Cardiol

2Morbid Obesity CV Risk
Objective
- To determine the prevalence of morbid obesity
(weight gt300 pounds) and clustering of
cardiovascular risk factors (diabetes mellitus,
current smoking, hypertension, low HDL
cholesterol, and elevated C-reactive protein)
among participants in the United States National
Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES)

Study Population
- Male and female participants with body weight
measures from NHANES II (1976-80), III (1988-94)
and 1999-2004 - Patients stratified by weight lt300 or gt300 pounds
- Diabetes defined by self-report, physician
diagnosis, fasting glucose gt126 mg/dL, or
medication use

Conclusions
- Prevalence of morbid obesity (weight gt300 pounds)
increased 15-fold between 1976-2004 - The prevalence of hypertension, diabetes
mellitus, low HDL cholesterol, and elevated CRP
is significantly higher in subjects gt300 compared
with lt300 pounds - Weight limits on radiologic equipment for
cardiovascular imaging may preclude morbidly
obese patients from undergoing diagnostic
procedures
