1
Eriksons Stages of Human Development
  • By Sarah B. , Don D.
  • Elizabeth A. , and Will E.

2
Trust vs. Mistrust
  • The first stage begins during infancy and
establishes our most basic sense of trust
  • If you receive more attention and love, the more
confidence and trust in yourself and your
    environment.
  • People who unloved and abused tend to become
    insecure and mistrustful.
  • Such individuals are likely to mature with deep
    emotional scars.

3
Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt
  • Autonomy is the freedom of self-direction.
  • The second stage occurs between the ages of one
    and four.
  • During this time, children begin to experience
    autonomy.
  • With support they develop the confidence to
    assert themselves.
  • They began to make decisions, but they sense the
    need for reasonable limits.

4
Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt cont.
  • Children who are not allowed to explore the world
around them have difficulty establishing their
    autonomy.
  • If their failures are emphasized rather than
    their successes

5
Initiative vs. Guilt
  • Eriksons third stage of development involves
feelings of initiative or desires to begin
    action.
  • Children reach this stage when they are four to
    five years old.
  • They develop imagination and begin to do things
    on their own.
  • Children who are not allowed to play with peers
and develop their own games and activities, may
feel guilty and they might cling to adults.

6
Accomplishments and industry vs. Inferiority
  • From about the ages of six to twelve, children
are in the fourth stage of development.
  • During this time, they establish a sense of
    accomplishment and industry.
  • Children in this stage are allowed to plan their
    own projects and activities.
  • Deep feelings of inferiority will dominate their
    developing personality.
  • Inferiority is feeling inadequate and
    unimportant.

7
Identity vs. Identity Confusion
  • The fifth stage occurs during adolescence.
  • The main need of this period is to establish a
    sense of identify.
  • Identify is knowing who you are and understanding
    your roles in society.
  • As adolescents gain maturity, they begin to view
life and the world around them differently.
  • Adolescents, who are not able to establish stable
roles for themselves, may become preoccupied with
their identities in the eyes of others.

8
Intimacy vs. Isolation
  • The sixth stage is establishing a sense of
    intimacy with others.
  • They are able to give themselves to others.
  • People who have difficulty establishing close
personal relationships feel isolated and alone.

9
Generativity vs. Self-Absorption
  • The seventh stage includes adults who develop a
    sense of generativity.
  • Generativity is when people begin to be concerned
with others beyond their own families.
  • People who fail to establish a sense of
generativity may fall into a state of
    self-absorption

10
Integrity vs. Despair
  • A sense of integrity develops in people who
succeed in the final stage of development.
  • Integrity is a state of being complete.
  • Those who have not achieved integrity are likely
    to feel despair.
