Title: Is Reading Recovery Effective

1
Is Reading Recovery Effective?
  • By Shauna Boyle and
  • Shelley Hershberger

2
Reading Recovery
  • Goal
  • Research-based intervention
  • Dr. Marie Clay
  • Trademarked program

3
Training
  • Yearlong commitment
  • Trainer of trainers model
  • Training Sites
  • Not everyone can be trained.

4
Reading Recovery Lessons
  • Lessons are 12 to 20 weeks.
  • Teaching for strategies.
  • The lessons are different for every child.

5
Purpose
  • The purpose of this study was to determine if
Reading Recovery is an effective program for
    Reading Recovery Students.

6
Hypothesis
  • Reading Recovery/ELI is an effective program for
    struggling first grade students.

7
Population
  • We sent out 15 surveys to Reading Recovery (ELI)
    teachers in a suburban community

8
Limitations
  • limited amount of time
  • lack of teachers interest in surveys
  • the small amount of Reading Recovery/ELI teachers
  • Definitions
  • Reading Recovery
  • Early Literacy Intervention (ELI)

9
Procedure
  • Collected data from Reading Recovery/ELI teachers
    at suburban elementary schools.
  • Developed into an instrument so that research
questions could be tested that show Reading
    Recovery/ELI is effective.

10
How many students do you teach each school year?
  • Between 8 and 28 students were served this school
    year per teacher.

11
Are you Reading Recovery (ELI) certified?
  • Many of the Reading Recovery (ELI) teachers are
    not certified.

12
Special Education after Reading Recovery (ELI)
  • By intervening with students in first grade it
can help to reduce the referrals and placements
    in special education.

13
Why is early intervention beneficial?
  • Put students back on track before they begin to
    fall behind in grade level.
  • The most crucial age for phonological awareness
and phonemic awareness is between ages 4-8.

14
Do students benefit from Reading Recovery?
15
Is Early Intervention Beneficial?
16
Individualized Lessons Are Key
17
How are student scores affected by Reading
Recovery (ELI)
  • This is a wonderful one-on-one program that
helps students identify their strengths and learn
how to compensate for their weaknesses in
    reading.
  • One of the greatest benefits of this program
aside from giving students a boost in their
reading skills is that their self confidences
    grows immensely.
  • As for purely the scores, I have no doubt that
they would achieve the growth that I am
    constantly seeing.

18
Our Recommendation
  • We have found that Reading Recovery (ELI) is very
    effective.
  • But, we found that there is a lack of teachers in
    this area.
  • The training is very demanding and expensive, but
well worth it considering the effects of Reading
    Recovery.

19
Conclusion
  • What I learned from the data collected.
  • Was our hypothesis correct?
