8Inter-Regional Workshop on Strengthening
Operational Agrometeorological Services
- Held in Manila, Philippines in March 2004
- Co-sponsored by WMO, FAO, and PAGASA
- Twenty-seven participants from eleven countries
attended. - Several recommendations crucial to strengthening
operational Agrometeorological Services were
identified - Recommendations provided a starting point for the
ICT Meeting
9Recommendations from the
Inter-Regional Workshop
- Greater interaction between agrometeorologists,
agricultural extension services and others to aid
farmers. - Comprehensive capacity building strategy at
national and regional levels, sharing
methodologies and experiences. - Promote the application of climate information
for sustainable development by increasing the
awareness and understanding of policy makers. - Coordinate and integrate national agricultural
weather policy to ensure agricultural services
and food security. - Establish international standards for crop data
reporting and phenological observation networks. - Need to involve communication experts in
information delivery to farmers.
10Meeting of CAgM Implementation/Coordination Team
(ICT) on Agrometeorological Services
- Held in Manila, Philippines March 2004
- Eleven participants from eight countries
attended. - Based on the recommendations from the previous
workshop, 7 regional projects proposals were
initiated
11 Regional Project Proposals
- RA-I Promote seasonal rainfall outlooks to
increase food security via the production of the
grain staple food. - RA-II Application of climate information and
predictions to agricultural service and food
security in the South and Southeast Asia. - RA-II (2) Pilot Project for establishing a
Center for Agrometeorological Curriculum
Development and Training at the Level of
Intermediaries. - RA-III Application of agrometeorology to benefit
the improvement of the production of vineyards.
12 Regional Project Proposals
- RA-IV Demonstrate benefits of Integrated Crop
Management (ICM) techniques for agriculture. - RA-V Weather and climate information for
sustainable agriculture in small islands in the
Caribbean and Southwest Pacific. - RA-VI Strengthening operational applications for
agriculture by integrating crop models, remote
sensing and GIS technologies for decision makers.
13Technical Meeting on CLIPS and Agrometeorological
Applications
- Held in Guayaquil, Ecuador in Dec 2003.
- Co-sponsored by WMO AGM and CLIPS
- Twenty-four participants from ten countries
attended. - Current advances in seasonal forecasting and
future challenges, and applications of climate
information for agriculture in the Andean region
were discussed. - A regional project for implementation in the
Andean Countries was identified.
14Regional Working Group Meetings
- RA-II Working Group Meeting on Agricultural
Meteorology (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Dec 2003) - Nine participants from six countries attended.
- RA-VI Working Group Meeting on Agricultural
Meteorology (Braunschweig, Germany Dec 2003) - Ten participants from ten countries attended.
15Training Events
- RA-II Training Workshop on Satellite, Remote
Sensing, and GIS Applications in Agricultural
Meteorology (Dehradun, India July 2003). - RA-I Training Seminar on Information Technology
related to Internet for Agricultural Meteorology
(Nairobi, Kenya Dec 2003). - Roving Seminar on the Application of Climatic
Data for Desertification Control, Drought

three chapters - Authors being contacted for additional chapter
assignments.
18World AgroMeteorological Information Service
(WAMIS)
- Conceived and developed from Inter-Regional
Workshop (Barbados, 2001) and Expert Team Meeting
(USA, 2002) - Initially Funded by NOAA
19Benefits of WAMIS to Members
- WAMIS helps members to disseminate and improve
their agro meteorological products. - As a dedicated web server, it allows countries to
place their agrometeorological bulletins and
advisories on a near real-time basis. - Hosts training modules to help members improve
the quality and presentation of their
agrometeorological bulletins. - Provides a central location for
agrometeorological information so that members
can quickly and easily evaluate the various
bulletins.
