Title: Steps we DO NOT take to ensure manure sample integrity:
1(No Transcript)
2Steps we DO NOT take to ensure manure sample
integrity
3We do not provide sample bottles containing
preserving agents, such as Sulfuric Acid.
4This could cause severe injury to the person
collecting the sample, if collection is not
performed extremely carefully.
5There are possible regulatory concerns or legal
repercussions in the event of an accident.
6Not to mention the very likely possibility of the
sample bottle exploding duringshipment, because
of the gasthat reactions would produce.
7We do not addpreserving agentswhen we
receivesamples, because of the same possibility
of explosion in storage.
8Steps we DO take to ensure manure sample
integrity
9We provide free, verifiably clean liquid manure
bottles and semi-solid/solid manure bags.
10We offer free consulting on how manure should be
sampled. We suggest to ourcustomers that
samplesbe shipped via overnightdelivery, and
withcold packs, if possible.
11As soon as we receive manure samples, they are
checked into our database, and stored in a
refrigerator at 3 to 5 degrees C until analyses
begin.
12Moisture Analysis
Moisture Analyses are performed at 70 degrees C
to help prevent excessive loss of ammoniac
nitrogen.
13We perform the moisture analysis for semi-solid
and solid samples as a two-step process to help
obtain a more usable and representative sample
for other analyses. A large amount of sample (gt
100g) is dried to a moisture of less thanbut
near to 10. Then the entire driedsample is
ground to passthrough a 2mm screen.
14Then this ground sample is used for remaining
tests, except for ammonia analysis. The ground
sample is dried further to a constant weight. The
total loss on drying (moisture) is calculated as
follows (A(B/C))((1-(B/C))100) A Moisture
from dried sampleB Weight of sample after
first dryingC Initial sample weight before
first drying
15The As Received Basis results of the other
analyses performed on the dried sample are then
calculated as follows A(B/C) A Result from
dried sampleB Weight of sample after first
dryingC Initial sample weight before first
drying
16Ammonia Analysis
Ammonia analysis for both liquid manure samples
and semi-solid and solid manure samples are
performed on the sample as it was received (As
Received Basis).
17We take extra precautions during the ammoniac
nitrogen analysis by covering samples that have
been dissolved in water with Para film, and we
monitor the time samples are mixed to prevent
excessive stirring and loss of ammonia. If deemed
necessary, the pH of the sample may be dropped
below 2.
18Total Nitrogen Analysis
Total Nitrogen is determined by performing a
combustion analysis. We take extra precautions to
ensure that we are determining all forms of
nitrogen (organic nitrogen and ammoniac nitrogen).
19For liquid manure samples, immediately after
samples are weighed, a couple of drops of
concentrated Sulfuric Acid are added to the
sample. This prevents the loss of
excessiveamounts of ammoniac nitrogenwhile the
sample is waiting to beanalyzed. We have
observedstatisticallyhigher resultsfrom
samplestreated withSulfuric Acid.
20For semi-solid and solid samples we clinicalize
the analysis of Total Nitrogen. First we perform
the ammoniac nitrogen analysis on both the As
Received sample and the dried ground sample.

21Then we determine the nitrogen content of the
dried ground manure sample using combustion
analysis.
22We then calculate the total nitrogen of the
sample on an As Received Basis as
follows ((A-B)(C/D))E A Nitrogen from
dried sampleB Ammoniac Nitrogen from dried
sampleC Weight of sample after first dryingD

23P2O5 (P), K2O (K), and OtherTrace Metal Analyses
P2O5, K2O and other trace metal analyses do not
require the same precautions as tests mentioned
earlier. They are simply weighedand digested
foranalysis.
24We do take special care to ensure that the entire
sample is fully digested. The easiest way of
ensuring complete digestion is by looking for the
absence of Active Site Boiling.

25This completes the discussion of our steps taken
to ensure the integrity of manure samples. Thank
you for your attention.
