ABILITY OF OCT TO IDENTIFY RNFL DEFECT BEFORE
STANDARD AUTOMATED PERIMETRY IN GLAUCOMA
Orna Geyer, Tagil Arev-Fishelzon, Eitan
Segev Carmel Medical Center, Haifa
2
  • In glaucoma, structural changes in the optic disc
    precede functional visual impairment

3
Purpose
  • To evaluate the capability of OCT for detection
of nerve fiber loss before the appearance of a
defect on visual field examination in glaucoma

4
Methods
  • 29 glaucoma eyes with altitudinal VF defect
  • 29 healthy eyes of age-matched normal individuals

Take Home Message
  • OCT can recognize RNFL loss beyond a
    corresponding VF defect
  • OCT may be more sensitive than VF test for the
detection of the extent of the glaucomatous damage
