What is Reyes Syndrome
  • Reyes Syndrome is a rare, yet serious childhood
    disorder that causes inflammation of the brain
    and quick build-up of fat in the liver. (1) It
    usually occurs after a viral illness such as
    influenza or chicken pox. (2)

History
  • Discovered in 1963 by Dr. Ralph Reye. (3)

Cause
  • Exact cause is uncertain.
  • Research indicates it is caused by a negative
    bodily reaction to aspirin given during a viral
    illness. (2)

Symptoms
  • Vomiting
  • Mental Confusion
  • Lethargy
  • Seizures
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fever
  • Rash (seldom)

Diagnosis
  • Blood test
  • Lumbar procedure (spinal tap)
  • Biopsy of the liver

Prevalence
  • Rare! (2)
  • Majority inflicted are infants, children, or
    adolescents
  • Occurs equally in males and females (4)
  • New statistics claim that it occurs in fewer than
    20 children in the United States each year. (1)

  • Depends on
  • Symptoms
  • Severity of mental changes
  • rate at which the disorder is progressing
  • Medication (5)
  • Antibiotics
  • Liquids
  • Vitamin K

Prognosis
  • Depends on how bad the damages are to the central
    nervous system.
  • Mortality rate used to be 90 today it is about
    20 (thanks to monitoring and early treatment)
  • Once in a coma state, death is bound to occur.
  • Children who survive the acute phase recover
    fully. (1)
