Introduction
  • Depletion of address space with IPv4 and rapid
    development of online and mobile technology
    necessitated the need for a new communication
    protocol
  • Faster and more efficient networks are needed to
    address todays demands for information access
    and communication
  • Large address space, plug and play, and better
    security are some of the advantages of IPv6 over
    IPV4
  • IPv6 has the potential to boost the future growth
    of Malaysian ICT and Internet business sector as
    it can launch a host of new services and products
  • With IPv6, Malaysia once again has the
    opportunity to be one of the global ICT leaders
    and as thus, be one of the first to reap its
    benefits

  • Japan is very aggressive in the realization of
    IPv6
  • Sees IPv6 as an opportunity for all industries to
    achieve greater ROI in line with the evolution of
    the internet at 2010
  • National Strategy for the adoption of IPv6 called
    u-Japan (Ubiquitous Japan) in Sept 2000
  • Provided support for academic research through
    the WIDE project, development of new IPv6 based
    applications, and tax incentives for
    organizations that deploy IPv6
  • Japans investment in IPv6 is US10 million to
    US13 million a year
  • Estimates that the move to IPv6 will create a

  • Taiwans government networks will be IPv6 ready
    by the end of 2007

  • Has instituted a full adoption policy of IPv6 by
    creating the China Next Generation Internet
    (CNGI) budgeted over 1.4 billion Yuan (US170
    million) provided by the NDRC (National
    Development Reform Commission) to support six
    next generation networks
  • CNGI project will be by far the largest
    commercial backbone ever-built from scratch for a
    single technology to become the glue for all
    services in China for fixed line, mobile, GRID
    and research
  • Chinese officials restated that they want the
    Chinese internet to be completely IPv6 in time
    for the 2008 Olympics

  • The telecom sector regulator, Telecom Regulatory
    Authority of India (TRAI), has recently provided
    the government with recommendations on further
    initiatives for accelerating the growth of IPv6
    in India
  • India will soon get its native IPv6 network in
    line with China's Next Generation Internet
    project
  • The IPv6 Forum India has taken a step in this
    direction by signing a MoU with the China IPv6
    Council
  • The IPv6 network, which will be laid at a cost of
    US 176 million, will ensure better security,
    video-on-demand services and other new features
    across devices

    2006 by the Networkers Society of Pakistan (NSP)
    closely working with the leaders of the IPv6

    networking and telecommunications infrastructure

    implemented first phase pilot project of KOREAv6
    in 2005, and planned to conduct second phase
    pilot service by year 2006 to foster adoption of
    IPv6
  • Has invested US83 million to support several
    national research projects KOREN (KOrea advance
    REsearch Network), KREOnet2 (Korea Research
    Environment Network 2), 6NGIX (IPv6 Next
    Generation Internet eXchange) and TEIN (Trans
    Eurasia Information Network)

  • United States
  • Windows operating system Vista supports both
    IPv4 and IPv6 while favoring the later
  • IBM and Cisco Systems have readied their products
    for operational, large scale IPv6 deployments
  • Most US companies from software developers, to
    Service Providers to Integrators gave little to
    no consideration to IPv6 until 2003 when DoD
    publicly stated its intent to migrate completely
    to IPv6 by 2011

  • The military sectors responded immediately with
    support from the German and French Ministries of
    Defence who did their homework independently and
    are now cooperating together
  • DoD now requires IPv6 support in all its
    purchases
  • Under the Office of Management and Budget, United
    States memo issued in August 2005, federal
    agencies must upgrade their network backbones by
    June 2008 to IPv6

  • EUROPEAN UNION
  • US216 million in funds were made available to
    several research projects (6NET, GEANT, Euro6IX,
    6INIT) dedicated to developing IPv6 deployment
    experience, protocol knowledge and new
    applications
  • They also brought together Universities and
    industry partners from around the world into
    various collaborative efforts
  • The M6Bone, an experimental worldwide IPv6
    Multicast network is also deployed in Europe
    allowing the ISPs of the members in the European
    commission to connect with IPv6 multicast
    technology

  • Euro6IX is the largest research project up to now
    being funded by the European IST (Information
    Society Technologies) Program
  • Euro6IX started in January 2002, building
    dedicated, native, IPv6 networks, involving
    National Research and Education Networks, Telcos
    and ISPs
  • The involvement of the major/incumbent European
    Telcos in this project, covering also the bigger
    areas that have a higher Internet user growth
    rate, reflects the strategic importance of the
    fast and timely introduction of IPv6 in Europe

  • Thailand
  • The JGNII-ThaiSarn (Thai Social/Scientific,
    Academic and Research Network) project is peering
    with the NSPIXP-6 in Tokyo Japan
  • The home users in Thailand are already capable of
    connecting through the tunnel broker with their
    home router gateway to the IPv6 enabled internet
  • The THNIC (Thailand Network Information Centre)
    has also offered IPv6 Domain Name Services since
    July 2005 and the Domain Name Registration for
    IPv6 is ready

  • Have set up a research group known as PREGINET
    (Philippine Research, Education and Government
    Information Network) to conduct RD activities as
    well as overseeing the deployment of IPv6
  • Indonesia
  • Has begun to move into their roadmap to implement
    and deploy IPv6 under its IPv6 Task Force
  • Vietnam
  • Has just begun venturing into IPv6 whereby the
    main focus is on the RD phase and they are
    attempting to test IPv6 based services such as
    the web, FTP and even Email

  • Alongside a significant need for reliability, it
    is critical to be able to scale them in order to
    meet expanding business needs and new business
    models
  • Opens new markets and new business opportunities

    networks would amplify the already proven
    economic benefits of IP communications
  • Increased technology adoption at national level
    creates a large internal market that can support
    and stimulate national IT innovation

  • The above statistics shows a clear trend of
    planned migration to IPv6 by many nations
    worldwide
  • Several of the e-projects identify target years,
    anywhere between 2008 and 2011 for a complete
    migration for the entire country or at least with
    government infrastructures
  • Today, Japan and EU are probably one to two years
    ahead of the US in terms of IPv6 knowledge and
    IPv6 deployment
  • In the fast paced Internet Economy this gap can
    prove to be a significant advantage in building
    new markets and developing new products
  • From a product and service perspective, IPv6 is
    not just an upgrade, it offers completely new
    ways to approach and solve problems
  • Their leadership should be followed in order to
    capitalize early on the upcoming Internet upgrade
  • This is the foundation upon which this Roadmap
    for Malaysia is built on

    areas under MyICMS 886 strategy
  • Under the RMK-9 (2006-2010) IPv6 is highlighted
    as one of three technologies that the Ministry of
    Energy Water and Communication (MEWC) will
    priorities
  • MyREN, a national research education network has
    an IPv6 dual stack deployed linking 12
    Universities and research centers

  • The School of Computer Science at USM has
    migrated totally to IPv6, and Universiti Malaya
    (UM) has established a focus group to experiment
    and plan their migration to IPv6
  • KTAK and MAMPU have already started their
    migration plan to implement IPv6 in their
    networks
  • MCMC has successfully started implementing their
    ISP IPv6 compliance audit process
  • Six among the seven ISPs have been audited for
    phase 1 of the three phases of compliance testing
    and are phase1 IPv6 compliant

    work out to 80 for training of staff services
    and another 20 for hardware
  • In general the cost is not high, the eventual ROI
    are clear
  • The most significant cost is related to human
    resource and IPv6 expertise
  • The Impact IPv6 will have on the nation can only
    eventually be measured by the aggressiveness of
    our planned IPv6 implementation, but so far, the
    signs are positive.

  • Ensure that Malaysias IPv6 timeline is followed
    by the nation and place it on the agenda of the
    National IT Council
  • Adoption of IPv6 by its agencies would serve as
    good examples to the public as well as to ISPs
    and system integrators, and would encourage them
    to follow suit in the deployment of IPv6
  • Encourage and support the deployment of IPv6 in
    schools (SchoolNet) and universities as they
    represent an excellent environment for large
    scale deployments which enable the testing of
    applications such as content (audio/video)
    distribution and e-learning
  • Enable the deployment of broadband on a larger
    scale and the adoption of 3/4G IP mobility which
    will open the doors for new applications and
    services in the consumer market

  • We will use the objectives stated in MyICMS 886
    as our Success Indicators, for the enabling of
    IPv6
  • Malaysian ISPs to migrate to IPv6 by the end of
    2006
  • All government agencies to commence migration to
    IPv6 by 2008
  • IPv6 is expected to be proliferated nationwide by
    2010 and with national network support
  • To achieve these objectives the stakeholders will
    have to work together, commit sufficient
    resources and abide by the time-line

    nation by 2010
  • This requires wholehearted commitment by all the
    stakeholders Government, Industry and Academia
  • Timeline set by MyICMS 886 needs to be adhered to
  • The PC and broadband markets are expected to grow
    arising from opportunities in emerging IPv6
    technology market
  • IPv6 will also contribute to growth in the non-PC
    consumer electronics market, entertainment
    industry, as well as broadband and wireless
    technology in the communications industry

  • With the world converging towards IP based
    communications we need to be proactive to invest
    now to reap for tomorrow with IPv6.
  • Responsibility lies on this nation to take up the
    challenge and take leadership in developing and
    deploying technological solutions
  • The change in core infrastructure requires
    supporting leadership as the full benefit can
    only be gained by complete migration to a dual
    stack environment
  • These require public sector support (local and
    national) and buy-in from the private sector

IPv6 provides opportunities as great as that of
the Internet itself
