Title: Do not repay anyone evil for evil' Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody' If it is

1
Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to
do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it
is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at
peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my
friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it
is written "It is mine to avenge I will repay,"
says the Lord. On the contrary    "If your
enemy is hungry, feed him       if he is
thirsty, give him something to drink.    In
doing this, you will heap burning coals on his
head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome
evil with good. - St. Paul Romans
1217-21

But I tell you who hear me Love your enemies, do
good to those who hate you, bless those who curse
you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone
strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other
also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop
him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who
asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to
you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you
would have them do to you.  "If you love those
who love you, what credit is that to you? Even
'sinners' love those who love them. And if you do
good to those who are good to you, what credit is
that to you? Even 'sinners' do that.
- Jesus Luke 627-33

Father George Zabelka, a Catholic chaplain with
the U.S. Air Force, served as a priest for the
airmen who dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima
and Nagasaki in August 1945, and gave them his
blessing. Over the next twenty years, he
gradually came to believe that he had been
terribly wrong, that he had denied the very
foundations of his faith by lending moral and
religious support to the bombing. Zabelka, who
died in 1992, gave this speech on the 40th
anniversary of the bombings

"Blood may flow in the streets of Montgomery
before we gain our freedom, but it must be our
blood that flows, and not that of the white man.
We must not harm a single hair on the head of our
white brothers." - Martin Luther King Jr.

"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye,
and tooth for tooth. But I tell you, Do not
resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on
the right cheek, turn to him the other also
"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your
neighbour and hate your enemy.' But I tell you
Love your enemies and pray for those who
persecute you, that you may be sons of your
Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on
the evil and the good, and sends rain on the
righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those
who love you, what reward will you get? Are not
even the tax collectors doing that? -
Matthew 538-39 43-46

  • Just War Theory A war is justified ethically
before God if it meets the following criteria
  • the damage inflicted by the aggressor on the
nation or community of nations must be lasting,
    grave, and certain
  • all other means of putting an end to it must have
been shown to be impractical or ineffective
  • there must be serious prospects of success
  • the use of arms must not produce evils and
disorders graver than the evil to be eliminated.
The power of modern means of destruction weighs
very heavily in evaluating this condition.

The war sermons rallied the evangelical
Christian congregations behind the invasion of
Iraq. An astonishing 87 of white evangelical
Christians in the United States supported the
Presidents decision? - New York Times (Jan.
20, 2006)

Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and
struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his
right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.)
Jesus commanded Peter, "Put your sword
away! - John 1810-11

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to
do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it

peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my

You belong to your father, the devil, and you
want to carry out your father's desire. He was a
murderer from the beginning, not holding to the
truth, for there is no truth in him. When he
lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a
liar and the father of lies. - Jesus (John
844)

(When Father Dave Becker left the Trident
submarine base in 1982 and resigned as Catholic
chaplain there, he said, "Every time I went to
Mass in my uniform and put the vestments on over
my uniform, I couldn't help but think of the
words of Christ applying to me Beware of wolves
in sheep's clothing.")

This morning, taxes we have paid are funding the
killing of human beings in Afghanistan. How
ok should we be with this?

Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one
another be sympathetic, love as brothers, be
compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with
evil or insult with insult, but with blessing,
because to this you were called so that you may
inherit a blessing. For,    "Whoever would love
life      and see good days     must keep his
tongue from evil     and his lips from deceitful
speech.  He must turn from evil and do good
he must seek peace and pursue it. - 1
Peter 38-11
