2
The VHE Sky
  • 3rd EGRET catalog
  • (20 MeV 30 GeV)
  • 271 sources
  • 67 AGN (Blazars)
  • 168 unidentified
  • Cherenkov Telescopes
  • (500 GeV 10TeV)
  • 18 sources
  • 8 blazars, only 4 also in 3rd EGRET catalog
  • MAGIC (30 GeV 50 TeV)

The VHE Blazar spectrum
  • The Spectral Energy Distribution (SED)
  • Two bumps
  • Synchrotron IC
  • Flaring (high flux) states
  • Sub-day scale variability
  • In small E range powerlaw spectrum
  • dN/dEk(E/Ec)-?
  • ? photon index

Blazar observation prospects
  • Naively Extrapolating EGRET spectra
  • Powerlaw IC peaks EBL absorption
  • Observation time to have a 5s detection lt 50hr
  • Ethr 30 GeV
  • Flux sensitivity down to 10-11 ph cm-2 s-1

3C 273 Z 0.158 F(Egt0.1) 15.410-8 ? 2.58
  • 28 Blazars (9 BL Lacs 19 FSRQs) are expected to
be detected with a significance of 5s in less
    than 50h
  • Also well use X-Ray satellite data to catch
    flaring AGN

SUMMARY
  • The AGN are a primary target for MAGIC
  • We extrapolated EGRET data to predict the
    observation time for these sources
  • We expect to observe at least 28 AGN with MAGIC
