1Gosforth Our Community
- The following presentation was made by a group
of Year 4 children at a recent competition run by
Your Homes Newcastle. The competition focussed on
our communities and how to improve them. - After a great deal of hard work by our Key Stage
2 classes, conducting surveys and researching our
area of Gosforth, this presentation was created
and entered into the competition. - In the face of some very stiff competition from
a number of Newcastle schools, Broadway East
First School, with the youngest group in the
competition, emerged as the winners! - Well done to all those who worked so hard
gathering the information and creating the
presentation. We hope you enjoy it.

3Introduction
- Welcome to Broadway East First Schools
presentation about Gosforth. - During the last weeks we have been learning about
our community. - We would now like to tell you all about what we
have discovered. - We have all had some ideas about improving
Gosforth. - Here they are
4Plants and Trees
- We counted 36 plant boxes and baskets and 18
trees in Gosforth High Street. - Plants and trees give us oxygen and take in the
carbon dioxide, so we need more plants and trees. - The plants and trees in Gosforth make the High
Street look gorgeous!
5Some more information about our plants and trees
- The traffic levels on the high street cause
pollution which harms the plants. - Perhaps we need to plant some more trees to
produce some more oxygen and make the air
cleaner.
6Interesting Features
Key Red Features we would like. Purple
Features we have already.
7Why is it good to have interesting features in
Gosforth?
- It attracts more people
- It makes it fun for children
- It is prettier
- Some features are very useful like clocks!
- Market stalls would be good for Gosforths
economy. - Flower boxes help the environment
8Places for Everyone
- The people who live in our community include
seniors, teenagers, young children and families
and those with disabilities. - We need to consider everyone when we are planning
our ideal community.
9Young children and families
Teenagers
Youth clubs, juice bar, teenage café, climbing
wall, skateboard park
Soft play, toddler groups, grassy areas,
Cinema, theatre, library, benches, sculptures,
parks, restaurants, places of
worship, swimming pool
Ramps for access, automatic doors
Allotments, bingo clubs, bridge clubs, dancing
classes
Facilities for Everyone.
Seniors and those with disabilities
10Activities for Children
- Children need things to do to keep us active and
fit! - We need places to play which are safe and away
from the street. - In Gosforth we have a swimming pool, parks,
tennis courts, squash clubs, rugby clubs,
football pitches and basketball courts.
11What we would like for children in our ideal
community.
12Litter
13Litter Facts (its not just a load of rubbish!)
- There are 27 litter bins on the High Street
- There are 7 cigarette bins
- There are NO recycling bins
- So why dont you simply
- use the bins and
- dont drop litter!
14- Vandalism includes, graffiti, breaking things
- and damaging property.
- We saw 3 pieces of graffiti in
- Gosforth High Street.
- We also saw some scratched windows
- and stickers on walls and windows.
- We were glad to find very little vandalism on
- the High Street.
- This is great, but there should be
- none at all!
Vandalism
15We all agree that
16More Police Present in Gosforth?
- Yes, to try to stop people on the street writing
graffiti. - Yes, to stop people driving in the bus lanes.
- Yes, to stop stealing and other crimes.
- Yes, to help people when they need it.
17Traffic
- We went to Gosforth High Street and conducted a
traffic survey, which told us how much traffic
there was on the High Street over a ten minute
period on an average Tuesday afternoon. We
multiplied the answer by 6 to work out the amount
of traffic in one hour. - Here are our results
- Bicycles 12
- Motor bikes 6
- Buses 180
- Lorries 300
- vans
- Cars 2310
18Types of Transport on Gosforth High Street.
We think these results are petrifying! This
amount of pollution could be seriously harming us.
19Car Parking
- There should be car parks near the High Street so
that people are encouraged to visit it and use
the facilities. - It would be great if the car parks were around
the edge of the High Street and the High Street
was a pedestrian area. - This would help reduce pollution on the High
Street. - It would make the High Street a safer place to
walk.
20It is important to have car parks, but we should
try to use cars only when we absolutely have to.
21Healthy Food. We need more restaurants and shops
selling fresh, healthy food because
22No Smoking!
- We need to stop people smoking in public places.
- It damages your lungs.
- It is not good for children to be around people
who are smoking. - Our ideal community would offer people help to
stop smoking by providing a Helpline. - Smoking is dangerous!
23Health Care
- An ideal community would have excellent health
care. - This should include hospitals,
- dentists, surgeries and
- medical centres, opticians and physiotherapists.
- All these facilities should be
- clean and welcoming.
24Renewable Energy
- We need renewable energy because other energy
sources such as oil, gas and coal are running
out. - We should make more use of wind power, solar
power and water power.
25Ideas for Using Renewable Energy in Gosforth.
- Fit all buildings with solar panels.
- Use solar panels on street lights to power them.
- Use wind turbines to provide power for factories
and large buildings. - Use hydro-electric power to provide our
electricity.
26Hostels for the Homeless
- An ideal community should care for people with no
homes of their own. - We dont know about any hostels in Gosforth at
the moment. - Everyone in the community should care for each
other.
27Summary
- Thank you for listening to our ideas. We hope
that you enjoyed our presentation. - Here is a song that we have written. Please feel
free to join in! - After the song, you may like to ask us some
questions about the presentation you have just
seen. We will also display some artwork we have
done in class.
