1
Key Technologies Network
  • Colin Cunningham

2
Objectives
  • WP5.1 Workshops Roadmapping
  • Map astronomical science goals onto technologies
already available and those requiring further
    development
  • Identify links to implementation paths and
    funding sources.
  • Investigate how European cooperation can help
make significant advances in these areas.
  • bring together teams to develop proposals for
    technology development relevant to astronomical
    telescopes and instrumentation.
  • WP5.2 Information Exchange Networking
  • Encourage interactions to develop European
    capabilities for technology development
  • e-mail newsletters, web-pages including an
    interactive WIKI site
  • Develop industrial networks using existing
    frameworks where possible.

3
Activity Summary
  • Core Working Group set up
  • First meeting held at SPIE in Glasgow
  • Second meeting in Grenoble on 13th Oct
  • Project Manager appointed also managing JRA5
    (Callum Norrie)
  • Interactive website (Twiki) in operation
  • Document management
  • Calendar
  • Action tracking
  • Discussion area

4
Core team Membership
  • ColinCunningham (Chair JRA5)
  • Norbert Hubin (JRA1)
  • Philippe Feautrier (JRA2)
  • Stefan Wagner (JRA3)
  • Alain Chelli (JRA4)
  • Filippo Zerbi (JRA6)
  • Bernhard Brandl (Lieden, Netherlands)
  • AlanBridger (UK ATC)
  • Pierre Kern (LOAG, France)
  • GavinDalton (RAL, UK)
  • CarlosMartin (IAC, Spain)
  • Goeran Olofsson (Stockholm, Sweden)
  • Martin Roth (Potsdam, Germany)

5
Associate Team
  • Preliminary list of members to be agreed at the
    next core team meeting
  • We want to have a good balance
  • Countries
  • Expertise
  • Industry
  • Gender!
  • Want active members who can cycle into core team

6
Roadmapping workshop this Wednesday!
7
(No Transcript)
8
Roadmap Database software
  • Strateva Technology Roadmap software purchased
  • Funded by Scottish Enterprise

9
Future development projects
  • Plans will follow roadmapping
  • Need to influence FP7 programme is it too late?
  • Must link to international agency funding and
    priorities eg ESO, ESA

10
First Workshops
  • IR Detectors with industry
  • Thermal Modelling
  • Particle Physics models for instrument
    development?

11
Other possible topics
  • Large optical devices gratings, lenses, filters
  • Dimensional Metrology
  • Cryogenics
  • Mechanisms including cryo
  • Smart Structures
  • Composites
  • Interface between electronics software, FPGAs
    control
  • Systems Engineering
  • Distributed control and integrated systems

12
Websites
  • Twiki in operation
  • External website requirements not yet defined

13
Future activities
  • Industry Club
  • Seen as important, but needs funding
  • Could get industry and national agencies to fund
  • Knowledge Base
  • We want to help development groups know what
knowledge exists in Europe both research and
    industrial groups
  • Both activities lower priority will be started
once the network has really become productive

14
Issues for the Opticon Board
  • What is the scope of Technology in Opticon?
  • Waveband 0.4 to 100 micron?
  • Ground based and Space
  • What do we mean by Technology
  • Include systems, software, facilities.
  • What should we concentrate on?
  • My bias is technology for ELT instruments
  • What timescale?
  • 5-15 years?
