1
Chapter 28
  • Jussive and Purpose Clauses

2
Jussive Clauses
  • A Jussive clause is one of the independent uses
of the Subjunctive mood in Latin.
  • By independent, I mean that the Jussive clause is
the main clause of a sentence.
  • The Jussive is recognized most easily because the
main verb of the sentence is in Subjunctive mood
(usually Present tense) without any other
    introductory words.

3
Jussive Clauses
  • The Jussive is most easily thought of as a polite
    command or wish.
  • Its most frequently translated with the English
    words let or may.
  • The negative is usually introduced by the word
    ne.

4
English Examples
  • Lets go to the store.
  • May your trip go well.
  • May they not try to be heroes.

5
Latin Examples
  • parens filiam amet
  • ne de hoc taceam
  • in omnibus valeant
  • miles ducem moneat

6
Purpose Clauses (Final Clauses)
  • Unlike the Jussive clause, the Purpose clause is
    a dependent clause.
  • That means that the Purpose clause will never be
the main clause of a sentence and can never stand
    alone.
  • It also works to indicate the purpose or reason
for the action in the main clause of the sentence.

7
Purpose Clauses
  • This clause is most identifiable by the fact that
there is a main clause that it is subordinate to
and one of the introductory words.
  • Its introductory words are ut in the positive
    and ne in the negative.
  • Its most frequently translated with the English
words so that or in order to/that.

8
English Examples
  • I went to the theater in order to see a movie.
  • She vacuums so that her mother doesnt yell at
    her.
  • We study Latin to be the coolest kids in school.

9
Latin Examples
  • meliora et maiora facit ne vitam misserrimam
    agat.
  • arma paremus ne libertas nostra tollatur.
