Title: The Early Days

1
Computing History
  • The Early Days

2
Napiers bones
  • In the early 1600s, a Scottish mathematician
called John Napier invented a tool called
Napier's Bones, which were multiplication tables
inscribed on strips of wood or bone.

3
Charles Babbage
  • 1791 - 1871
  • Inventor of the Difference Engine, which could be
used to produce tables of information.
  • Before this machine was finished, he had a better
    idea, for the Analytical Engine.
  • It was never actually completed due to its cost
    and complexity.

4
Ada Byron - Lady Lovelace
  • 1815 - 1852
  • A partner of Babbage, she worked on his projects
    with him.
  • A gifted mathematician, she made many valuable
    contributions to their work.
  • She is regarded as the worlds first computer
    programmer.
  • The programming language, Ada, is named after her.

5
Joseph-Marie Jacquard
  • 1752-1834
  • Inventor of the automatic loom.
  • Used for weaving, it allowed complex patterns to
    be produced easily.
  • Used punchcards to control the pattern woven by
    the loom.
  • The punchcard idea was used later to store data
    in other machines.

6
Herman Hollerith
  • 1860 - 1929
  • Invented a machine used to process the data from
    the 1890 US census.
  • It used punchcards to store the data for
    processing.
  • Formed a company - the Tabulating Machine
    Company.
  • Later became International Business Machines, or
    IBM.

7
Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer
  • ENIAC was the first high-speed electronic digital
    computer developed by William Mauchley.
  • It filled a thirty-by-fifty foot room and weighed
    thirty tons.
  • ENIAC was developed by John Mauchly and J.
Presper Eckert during World War II.

8
John W. Mauchley
  • 1907 - 1980
  • He and J. Eckert invented the ENIAC computer.
  • Started building the ENIAC in 1943 and completed
    it in 1946
  • Mauchley worked on the overall design of the
ENIAC, while Eckert worked on the circuitry.

9
John Von Neumann
  • 1903-1957
  • Von was the creator of the EDVAC.
  • During and after WWII, Von Neumann was regarded
as the best applied mathematician in the world.

10
Alan Turing
  • 1912 - 1954
  • Founder of computer science, mathematician,
    philosopher, codebreaker.
  • Due to his codebreaking work, Turing was probably
responsible for the Allies winning the war.
  • Creator of the Turing Test for machine
    intelligence.
